Port and harbour dredging event, Brighton, 30th September 2010

The European funded SETARMS Interreg project is holding a one-day launch seminar in Brighton on 30 September 2010.

SETARMS is a joint Anglo-French project set up to examine the common problems experienced in the dredging of ports and harbours on both sides of the Channel. Partners on the UK side include the Universities of Brighton and Exeter and on the French side a number of ports are directly involved.

There is no charge for delegates attending this seminar.

Dredging has always been accepted as a necessary operational cost for ports and harbours, and one which can be particularly difficult in marinas. Over the years increasing environmental concerns have made this operation more complex and in some cases the disposal of dredged sediments at sea is no longer allowable. Some sediments require remedial treatment, adding to the cost of disposal. The project seeks to find sustainable, economical and environmental solutions to the specific management of these materials.

In particular one of the project work packages is looking at the re-use of suitable sediments in the production of bulk construction materials, thus potentially converting an expensive waste product into one with a profitable revenue earning capability.

At the seminar a number of presenters from both sides of the Channel will set out the current situation, describe the objectives of the project and the work now being undertaken, and the day will conclude with a round table session on the future of dredging operations.
