Doors open for marine supply companies

Woolston

Significant spin off benefits will be generated by US Super yacht company Palmer Johnson’s move to SEEDA’s Woolston site, with local communities and marine industry suppliers set to reap the rewards of SEEDA’s most recent drive to cultivate inward investment in the South East.

Palmer Johnson has now confirmed that it intends to build a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Woolston, as well as opening a new manufacturing facility at Hythe in New Forest. Rolan Staub, Director at Palmer Johnson explained that the new production facilities were integral to the company's growth strategy and that its UK expansion allows Palmer Johnson to meet the global demand for its products. He said; "We are also keen to tap into the marine base of the region in terms of working with local suppliers and sub-contractors".

The decision to expand in the Solent follows the setting up of a design office at East Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, last year. The new facility at Woolston Riverside will open in 2009, but in the meantime, Palmer Johnson will build prototype vessels at Hythe Marine Park.

Marine South East is discussing with the BMF and SEEDA how best to maximize the benefits to marine supply chains and also to ensure that the skilled workforce is expanded to cope with the increased employment.
