For the third year running Marine South East will be sponsoring the Seawork innovation showcase. It reflects the growing support of marine innovation in the region and research has shown that more than 80% of visitors to the show come specifically to see new products and innovations.

Renewable energy: a growing sector for the South East marine industry...

A South East consortium led by Marine South East has recently won funding to develop the infrastructure to transmit power from marine renewables. The consortium, which also involved South East companies JP Kenny, IT Power and University of Southampton (working through Marinetech South), will develop the proposal further over the next year, having secured nearly £80,000 of funding.

Installation to start on world first prototype tidal stream generator...

Installation of a prototype tidal stream generator is due to commence this week, after the Secretary of State, John Hutton, granted planning permission last month. The Pulse Stream 100 is the world’s first shallow water tidal stream grid connected generator, and the prototype will help reveal opportunities to use well located shallow water resources in close proximity to power consumers. The high energy intensity device is able to capture a significant amount of the energy contained within tidal flows as its arrangement is not restricted by water depth.

South East dominates leisure marine industry...

New figures show that the South East clearly dominates as the region with the greatest revenue share (36.1%) of the leisure marine industry with a growth of 5% in comparison with last year.

St Lawrence College in Ramsgate is one of 21 schools taking part in the 2008 Schools Marine Challenge. As they strive for success in this year’s competition St Lawrence College is aiming to top last year’s entry. Particular attention has been placed on multi-hull design, producing different hull types for solar, electric and methanol boats.

Opportunities for engineering graduates to start out on their own...

The National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship (NCGE) is a government funded not-for-profit organisation that works with Higher Education Institutions in England to promote entrepreneurship education and graduate start-up.
NCGE has recently launched two opportunities for Engineering students/graduates who might be interested in starting their own business: The Flying Start Programme for Engineers supported by the Royal Academy of Engineers and the Flying Start Global Entrepreneurs Programme supported by Kauffman Foundation(US).
