6th December MareNet Racine event in Dover will bring together key themes of project

Dover harbour

The RACINE project has the objectives of reducing congestion and the resulting costs to improve competitiveness and reduce the environmental burden of freight transport and aid economic development through improvements in the efficiency of freight logistics and logistics interfaces.

Led by Marine South East, 12 partners from South East UK and the Upper Normandy region of France have been working together for 20 months on the RACINE (Regional Action for Competitive Infrastructure & Economy) project with the aim of improving the efficiency of freight logistics.

RACINE has produced a variety of outputs including:]

- A report presenting new developments in the transport environmental framework and policy and the opportunities for the South-East region in terms of developing its competitiveness and infrastructure.
- A ‘lean logistics’ study looking at the scope for further efficiency improvements in the distribution networks of major supermarket chains.
- A study investigating the benefits of establishing a Construction Consolidation Centre (CCC) in North Kent including the possible use of regular waterborne freight services into a CCC.
- A study of the current and future economic activities on the River Medway.
- Support of the ‘Schools Marine Challenge’ to interest young people in the maritime industries industry.
- Creation of an Anglo-French data base of logistics expertise

An Interreg IIIA cross-border project, RACINE will be ending in December. Marine South East's MareNet networking initiative will be hosting an event at the Pines Calyx conference venue near Dover on 6th December 2007 to disseminate the project's findings and recommendations.
