Olympic sailing

Over 70 companies attended the November MareNet event looking at opportunities for marine businesses in the run up to 2012.

The event was sponsored by Hampshire County Council and held at the waterside location of Hayling Island Sailing Club. The presentations kicked off with a talk from John Rees-Evans from Hampshire County Council who spoke of a number of initiatives that the council were pursuing relating to 2012. These include tourism pre and post the event, workplace fitness and health and opportunities for businesses to sponsor local Olympic competitors. John also noted the Hampshire County Council website with information for businesses at www.hants.gov.uk.

Mark Stubbings, Chief Executive of the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy followed with a very informative presentation on the background to the academy, the building works between now and 2011, the 2012 event and the legacy of the site post 2012.

This was followed by Peter Waring from the RYA Facilities department who talked about the economic benefits of the success of the UK Sailing team to the industry and the possible effects on the boating infrastructure and facilities. The evening was rounded off by Paddy Herlihy from SEEDA who claimed to have the best job in the world as the South East coordinator for the 2012 games. Paddy talked very enthusiastically about ways for businesses to engage through the seven themes that the region has defined. He encouraged businesses to look at the SEEDA website and register their interests www.seeda.co.uk.

All the presentations and papers from the event are on the Marine South East website at http://www.marinesoutheast.co.uk Marine South East has also put together a 2012 useful contacts list in the useful links page on the website.
