Training programme launched for inspirational leaders

The Leadership for Global Competitiveness programme is a major initiative for the south east designed to assist owners and managers of high growth businesses develop inspirational leadership skills and so create strategic advantage for their business.

Research among European businesses shows that high performing businesses require inspirational leaders who can develop their own teams.

The intensive programme will help business leaders to:

- Create and communicate a sense of vision
- Motivate staff and colleagues by leading and supporting them through innovation and growth
- Establish an organisational culture that champions innovation, new product development and new ways of working

Participants in the programme are mentored by a specialist advisor who will produce a personal profile, identify areas of strength and weakness and recommend actions designed to develop leadership skills for the individual and for their team. The programme will act as a catalyst for growth, providing support through a number of initiatives:

- A tailored diagnostic review of either an individual Managing Director, or the team running the business, covering such areas as:
- behaviour and personality profiles, using tools such as Insight and Myers Briggs
- team dynamics, using Belbin profiles
- leadership style analysis using various questionnaires
- business and leadership processes
- Agreed development plans with clear evaluation criteria
- Sourcing the best solutions
- Sourcing other potential funding streams
- Providing help in implementing the project outcomes
- Providing access to broader business support services

The programme is funded by SEEDA (South East England Regional Development Agency) and is offered free-of-charge to high-growth businesses. If undertaken through a commercial provider, participation in a similar programme would cost many thousands of pounds. Grants of £1000 are available to companies with less than 250 employees

The service has been designed to support high-growth businesses, and whilst there is no prescriptive eligibility criteria, past experience indicates that prospective candidates will probably be producing products or services in an innovative way and growing this provision by a minimum of 10% annually.
