TSB Funding Competition - Vessel Efficiency 2

The Technology Strategy Board, the UK agency set up to assist innovation across industries in the UK, has announced its next marine Collaborative R&D Competition - Vessel Efficiency II: Better systems at sea.

The first marine-specific competition, Vessel efficiency: piloting UK marine and maritime innovation, proved the industry's capability to develop innovative projects to make vessels more efficient, and this second competition will build on that success.

The competition will open in January 2014, covering the themes of voyage performance management and vessel system technologies. It will be seeking project proposals that demonstrate technologies that deliver significant fuel, system energy or operational efficiency improvements and/or emissions reductions, compared to the best technologies currently available.

About the Vessel Efficiency competition:

The competition builds on the industry roadmap which the Transport KTN supported the development of at the end of 2011. The road map identified several top priority themes, some of which are already being addressed through other investment routes and national activities, enabling this competition to focus on themes covering voyage performance, management and vessel system technologies.

Who should attend these events?

This competition is a welcome opportunity for marine companies throughout the UK, from leisure marine through to large shipping. The whole industry (from ship and boatbuilders to equipment and systems suppliers, including small businesses) should consider how it could help their R&D plans for next year.

The dialogue with potential project partners should start as soon as possible, so you are strongly encouraged to attend the Transport KTN awareness events (detailed below). Preparation ahead of the call open period (January to February) will ensure that you are ideally placed to maximise this opportunity. The BMF is working closely with the Transport KTN to disseminate information about this, and assist the formation of partnerships and collaborations.

What support is available to industry throughout the competition?

The Transport KTN have announced information and consortia building days for the Vessel Efficiency II "Better systems at sea" competition, expected to launch in Jan 2014. In advance of the competition launch the Transport KTN has arranged a number of consortia-building events to provide the opportunity to hear more about the competition and to network with other interested parties. There are two events remaining, being held in Merseyside and Newcastle.
