Renewable energy: a growing sector for the South East marine industry

A South East consortium led by Marine South East has recently won funding to develop the infrastructure to transmit power from marine renewables. The consortium, which also involved South East companies JP Kenny, IT Power and University of Southampton (working through Marinetech South), will develop the proposal further over the next year, having secured nearly £80,000 of funding.

JP Kenny, which has recently been selected as the Subsea Company of the Year by Subsea UK, a trade association representing 150 of the world's leading subsea companies, will now take the project forward starting this month.

Jonathan Williams, Chief Executive of Marine South East explains how this type of consortium work can help develop opportunities in emerging markets: "by bringing these companies together and leading the development of a proposal for funding we have helped these South East companies explore innovation opportunities in one of the fastest growing marine markets. Renewable marine technologies are being used around the globe and these companies are at the forefront of developing the technology capabilities."

"We are always looking for other opportunities to help companies develop innovative solutions such as this and would welcome the opportunity to help companies work in collaboration to gain funding."

The UK has substantial expertise in many fields of marine engineering and related supply chains of products and services. This project will highlight how cross-sector working can allow groups of complementary companies to tap growth markets, both in the UK and globally.

Successful outcomes will help specific companies to participate in a growing marine renewables market, and also provide an exemplar to many other companies. Marine SE is already involved in dialogue with public and private sector organisations regarding supply chain opportunities created by major marine renewable developments, stimulated by London Array and other offshore wind farm investments. This project will help to extend this role into the 'wet' renewables market.

This is an industrial research project which aims to explore feasibility of hydraulic power transmission for marine energy devices, and to create tools for assessing cost-effectiveness of hydraulic power transmission for different application requirements. PATCH will focus specifically on use of seawater hydraulics, for reasons of simplicity and avoidance of environmental hazard.

Pulse

Installation to start on world first prototype tidal stream generator

Installation of a prototype tidal stream generator is due to commence this week, after the Secretary of State, John Hutton, granted planning permission last month. The Pulse Stream 100 is the world’s first shallow water tidal stream grid connected generator, and the prototype will help reveal opportunities to use well located shallow water resources in close proximity to power consumers. The high energy intensity device is able to capture a significant amount of the energy contained within tidal flows as its arrangement is not restricted by water depth.

The PS100 is a 100kW tidal power device. It is specifically designed for shallow water and uses high-performance hydrofoils like underwater aeroplane wings which move up and down in the same way that a whale's tail does. This captures the energy from the tidal stream currents which can be converted to electricity.

Manufacture and installation is underway and a commissioned device is expected in the middle of this year. The PS 100 will be tested in the Humber Estuary near Grimsby. Hampshire based IT Power is the lead partner for this DTI/DBERR assisted project. It is also a collaborative project involving Econnect, BMT, Corus and the University of Hull. Key suppliers are, Siemens Flender, Bosch Rexroth, Control Techniques and Leroy Somer, with Pulse Tidal delivering on technical side of the project.

BMF stats 07

South East dominates leisure marine industry

New figures show that the South East clearly dominates as the region with the greatest revenue share (36.1%) of the leisure marine industry with a growth of 5% in comparison with last year.

The British Marine Federation recently released the 2006/2007 Key Performance Indicators for the UK Leisure and Small Commercial Marine Industry. Importantly, the total turnover of the UK leisure and small commercial marine industry is £2.952 billion, up 6.5% from 2005/6. Other headline figures include:

- Value added contribution, the principal measure of national economic benefit, is £1.053 billion (35.7% of turnover) - value comparable to 2005/6

- International trade revenue is £1.035 billion - an uplift in value of 12.7% from 2005/6. This revenue now represents 35.1% of total turnover.

- There are around 35,680 employees across the industry (Full Time Equivalent) - an increase of 1.9% from 2005/6.

- In the UK, there are around 4,300 businesses in the UK leisure & small commercial marine market

The figures also reveal clear evidence of the importance of both the service sectors and boat sector including manufacturing and distribution, each accounting for more than a third of revenue of over £1 billion each, with the remainder in engines / systems and equipment. There has also been a significant change in revenue from manufacture to distribution within the UK compared to 2005/6. This is due to a movement towards outsourcing overseas for some companies and more accurate classification by some members.

In addition, some trends are emerging when comparing year-on-year performance in the leisure marine market. Total boat revenue, for manufacture and distribution, has increased by 12% from last year, engines / systems by 3% and equipment by 6%. Services as a whole are at a same size in revenue as last year, with a slight increase in business services.

Woolston

Doors open for marine supply companies

Significant spin off benefits will be generated by US Super yacht company Palmer Johnson’s move to SEEDA’s Woolston site, with local communities and marine industry suppliers set to reap the rewards of SEEDA’s most recent drive to cultivate inward investment in the South East.

Palmer Johnson has now confirmed that it intends to build a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Woolston, as well as opening a new manufacturing facility at Hythe in New Forest. Rolan Staub, Director at Palmer Johnson explained that the new production facilities were integral to the company's growth strategy and that its UK expansion allows Palmer Johnson to meet the global demand for its products. He said; "We are also keen to tap into the marine base of the region in terms of working with local suppliers and sub-contractors".

The decision to expand in the Solent follows the setting up of a design office at East Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, last year. The new facility at Woolston Riverside will open in 2009, but in the meantime, Palmer Johnson will build prototype vessels at Hythe Marine Park.

Marine South East is discussing with the BMF and SEEDA how best to maximize the benefits to marine supply chains and also to ensure that the skilled workforce is expanded to cope with the increased employment.

Skills and Training

Back to School

Leap into action this summer and join the growing number of business leaders who are going back to school. Solent Skill Quest is calling for companies to put their thinking caps on and support the Eastleigh and Southampton Enterprise events in June and July 2008.

Enterprise events play an important role in linking schools with businesses. As part of their curriculum school students learn about the skills they will need for their future careers. This can range from their appearance, behaviour, and time keeping through to the ability to produce and execute business plans. One of the best methods of achieving this is by learning from the knowledge and experience of the people in the local business community. Enterprise days facilitate this sharing of information and skills.

Solent Skill Quest is based in Southampton and is one of many Education and Business Partnerships (EBP) in the South East region who organise this type of event. Enterprise days involve company representatives working with students to guide them as they hone their entrepreneurial skills. Amongst the challenges that the team (and you!) may face are, developing a marketing strategy to sell confectionery in Europe, or producing a business plan for the school prom.

Solent Skill Quest will facilitate the events at schools in the Eastleigh and Southampton area. If you decide to take part you will be given details and fully briefed beforehand. All that they ask is that you are willing to spend a day working with the students to help prepare them for their future careers. They appreciate that your time is valuable, but the input of your knowledge is shown to be invaluable to the students.

People who have taken part in previous events describe it as being "an enjoyable and rewarding experience" and many companies use it as an opportunity to link with schools to get to know their future workforce.

If you would like to participate in the Eastleigh and Southampton Enterprise events or require further information then please contact Wendy Miller at Solent Skill Quest on 023 80706102 or by e-mail Wendy.miller@solentskill.co.uk

Similar events are held across the South East Region and if you would like to be linked to an EBP in your area then please contact David Rea by e-mail at david@marinesoutheast.co.uk

Superyacht UK Launches New Careers Website

A new careers website has recently been launched by Superyacht UK, one of the largest associations within the British Marine Federation. The site, http://www.superyachtuk.com/careers, is designed to close the gap between interest in Superyachts and action, providing information on entry routes, career progression, qualifications needed and recruitment and training providers.

The Association has recognised that there is an increasing demand for crew to work on super yachts around the globe and aims to support those in the profession and raise the profile of the sector to encourage new recruits.

The tremendous growth experienced by the Superyacht industry, estimated at 500% in the past 10 years, has created a worldwide shortage of trained and qualified crew, both on deck and in engineering occupations. Experts are estimating that 435 yachts of more than 30 metres were launched in 2007, in addition to a number of 100 metres plus, creating a further huge demand.

Martin Redmayne, The Yacht Report and Chairman of Superyacht UK said: "The tremendous growth in the Superyacht sector is great news for the industry and this new website starts to address the demand for crew. It is a great initiative from Superyacht UK and will serve many purposes, from providing support to raising the profile of the sector and encouraging new entrants."

The website takes people through the job options available within the engineering, deck and service fields, with roles ranging from Captain to Electrician, Chief Steward to Chef. It also identifies the entry level positions and those jobs more likely to be found on larger yachts.

The site also outlines a step by step guide to gaining the correct training and qualifications, such as the MCA and RYA certifications, as well as putting people in touch with recruitment and training providers making the process quick and easy.

Superyacht UK, one of the largest associations within the British Marine Federation, and exists to support marine businesses in the UK supply chain and promote British excellence. The association is committed to improving, developing and expanding the market.

schools marine challenge

A hull of an idea

St Lawrence College in Ramsgate is one of 21 schools taking part in the 2008 Schools Marine Challenge. As they strive for success in this year’s competition St Lawrence College is aiming to top last year’s entry. Particular attention has been placed on multi-hull design, producing different hull types for solar, electric and methanol boats.

All patterns have been made in the school and the moulds are used to produce GRP hulls, the quality of which is as good as anything you could buy. Even staff are getting in on the act and have produced their own entry called, Mojo.

Schools Marine Challenge plays an important part in the development of links between schools and businesses across the South East. By working together knowledge is shared and the next generation of marine engineers and designers are on their way to success. Organised by the British Marine Federation and Marine South East, the aim of the challenge is to introduce school children to the world of marine engineering. Marine companies across the south east link up with local schools to give the pupils an insight into the world of boat building.

Since its inception the popularity of Schools Marine Challenge has grown with entries up 50 percent sine 2006. Port of Gdansk Authority port expansion presentation, Wednesday 7th May

Venue: UKTI Conference centre, London

A major port and infrastructure expansion is about to be launched along Poland's Baltic coast at Gdansk - the scene of a recent UK inspired container terminal development, now commissioned and in full operation. The new expansion will be a mega investment by the Port of Gdansk Authority, SA.

There is already a considerable flow of goodwill between Poland and UK following from the earlier container terminal. The Port of Gdansk Authority is including London in its launch programme through this presentation, to provide opportunities for participation from UK enterprises.

There is no doubt that the construction of the Central Port will be the largest development investment in the Port of Gdansk over the years to come. The conceptual design that has been recently conceived is novel and bold in character. It provides for creating approx. 450 ha of new port land as a result of land reclamation from the sea and 150 ha of inner water basins. The land thus formed will be designates for the construction of the following facilities: a general cargo terminal with a projected annual throughput capacity of 4 million tonnes, a passenger terminal with a traffic capacity of 2 million passengers per year and a container terminal - 3 million TEUs annually.

The Central Port will be designed to accommodate the biggest vessels that can enter the Baltic Sea. The planned investment project, which is possible owing to its location advantages, will pave the way for Gdansk to become a state-of-the-art and thoroughly universal port that can successful meet its clients' expectation.

The United States naval and coastguard programmes dwarf all other naval and maritime programmes in the world. Notwithstanding a general preference for US sourced designs, equipment and systems on US naval and US coastguard platforms, it is still possible for UK companies to exploit business opportunities in this market using a variety of different marketing strategies, particularly if they are involved in high technology products.

In particular, numerous smaller UK companies have succeeded in the US by teaming with US companies on specific projects or in wider joint ventures.

Aside from the United States, there also exists a very significant naval market in Central and South America where many of the countries are developing or updating their navies and coastguards.

Ongoing acquisition of modern and remarkably sophisticated naval platforms from around the world, together with the recent sales to several navies in South America of ex-Royal Navy vessels, have opened the way to UK companies, especially those offering in-service support to legacy equipments or niche products.

This seminar will review the current and future naval programmes of the United States and major maritime countries of Central and South America and the business opportunities that these present for the UK naval and maritime industries with presentations by Mr Bob Nugent of AMI International and by Mr Charles Macdowell of Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance.
