Training & Skills

New 3-D design training course launched to marine companies

The first CAD/CAM CATIA training course, specifically for marine companies, commences at the Marine Regional Resource Centre (RRC), Southampton, in January 2008. Superyacht UK and Marine South East have recruited leading Yacht Designers and Production Boat Builders who are planning to use or are already using the software..

The training consists of 2 x 5 day blocks covering the Fundamentals and the Advanced Marine Modules which have recently been introduced. Kenneth Cast, RRC Project Manager said;

“The funding from the collaboration of the CAD Training Pool and the RRC presents the best possible opportunity for British yacht designers to increase their knowledge and broaden their capabilities using this latest CATIA marine 3-D design software package. Hard won funding has significantly reduced the cost of this training for the Design Houses and more employers should seriously consider these heavily subsidised courses for their staff.

“Moreover, the RRC is working with the full support of the UK agent to ensure that the training packages are of the highest quality. We look forward to seeing more British designers make full usage of this fantastic offer to enhance their skills.”

The Project is being funded through SEEDA (the South East England Development Agency) and the purpose is to help marine companies to be well prepared for the use of advanced technology to remain competitive in the global market.

Although the initial training package is for CATIA, further training courses based on other software packages will be developed to encourage companies to up-skill their staff from 2-D to 3-D methods of design and manufacture. Companies who participate in the courses will be asked to assist with developing the training by providing constructive feedback and will receive a tapered subsidy. This will decrease as the course is developed and the biggest benefits will be gained by companies who enroll for the initial courses.

Training can be provided at work locations as long as a suitable room is available and the course is fully subscribed. Even if you are unable to fill 6 places with your own staff you may know of other companies who would be willing to work with you to fill the course.

If you would like to book a place for future Catia training or register your interest for 2-D to 3-D courses please e-mail David Rea on mailto:david@marinesoutheast.co.uk or call 023 80 111 597

Student Scoops Prize for ‘Well-Cut Jib’

Sixteen students and staff from Purbrook Park School will be visiting the prestigious London Excel Boat Show in January, following their success in the ‘Schools Marine Challenge’ at the Manufacturing, Engineering and Marine Skills Festival in October 2007.

The Hampshire based Skills Festival, highlighted career opportunities in manufacturing, engineering and marine industries and was attended by over 1500 students. One of them was Katharine Davies of Purbrook Park School who visited the British Marine Federation stand to gather information on becoming a 'Yacht Designer'.

Liv Whetmore (BMF Training Advisor) described Katharine as; "A very focused young lady who was ensuring she had the skills to achieve her ambition."

Katharine then visited the Schools Marine Challenge stand where she designed the sails for a racing yacht to compete against entries from other schools. After a day of racing, two yachts tied for first place on their race times. Race Organiser, Rob Austin, had to consider other factors to select the winner. In his opinion Katharine's design had the sleek lines and look of a racing vessel and this has ensured that Purbrook Park will be studying the latest marine technology in January.

During the last 18 months Marine South East has worked with many young people who have a keen interest in the marine sector and pursue it through a variety of activities such as, sailing schemes, adventure groups, or even helming the local water taxi at weekends.

Marine employers could benefit from their enthusiasm by recruiting school leavers and helping them to develop their skills. Marine South East can put you in contact with 'Ambassadors' who have experience of training apprentices within their own company. If you would like to speak with them and find out how they are successfully developing their workforce please e-mail David Rea on david@marinesoutheast.co.uk or call 023 80 111 597.

Business Support Opportunities around the region

Solutions logo

One-stop approach to training saves time and money

Solutions – The Training and Skills Partnership, offers a simple one-stop shop approach to sourcing and supplying to training to businesses in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Solutions take the leg work out of finding a suitable training programme.

Traditionally, business training needs have been met by a host of suppliers with HR managers having to sift through many offers to find the right training, and it is assumed that they will be able to work around problems and a host of information to make training courses work. Anna Wood, Project Director at Solutions, explains; "In an increasingly competitive world, managers need help to consider the issues affecting their business and their bottom line." She adds, "Many businesses fail to recognise that sometimes these issues are training related. Increasingly, managers are under a great deal of pressure and do not have the time, or often the experience, to sit and think about their training issues and how to resolve them.

"That's where we can help - by working together to identify and understand a company's skills and training related issues, and then find opportunities to resolve them. This may be an off the shelf course, delivered somewhere convenient or on company premises, or we may offer a tailored or bespoke solution. Because we are working with nine leading providers our offer will always be cost competitive. Where we have a large business with diverse training needs across both counties, the offer of the Partnership is ideal. Companies willing to network are able to access better training offers, and this can be a great opportunity for smaller cash-strapped businesses."

BMEA Trade Mission to Korea, Saturday 16th February to Saturday 23rd February 2008

BMEA is proud to present another trade mission to the world’s leading Shipyards in Korea.

The mission to Korea will embrace the world's three largest Shipbuilders - Hyundai Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering and Samsung Heavy Industries as well as Hyundai Mipo, STX and Hanjin.

Both Daewoo and Samsung have indicated to BMEA the amount of UK equipment purchased has doubled in the last year or so, particularly in respect of their tanker and LNG newbuilds.

With excellent support from the Commercial Section of the British Embassy in Seoul, BMEA along with the missioners has developed a close rapport with the leaders of the Shipyards and the leaders of the procurement teams over the last six years. As a result, the meetings with the yards have been finely tuned and highly focused, whereby they produce timetables for the companies to carry out one to one meetings with the relevant procurement teams who purchase your type of equipment, usually in private rooms at the Design and Engineering offices in the Shipyards.

For those companies that have products which span both the commercial and military field, and those who supply entirely military equipment, we are able to arrange one to one meetings with the procurement teams involved in the building of Korean surface ships and submarines.

For more information and to book please contact Clementina Upton, tel: 020 7928 9199, fax: 020 7928 6599 or email events@maritimeindustries.org

BMEA Outward Trade Mission to Turkish Shipbuilding and Repair Yards, 3-7 March 2008

From Monday 3rd- to Friday 7th March 2008 UK marine equipment manufacturers and service companies are invited to join the BMEA outward trade mission to Turkish shipbuilding and repair yards.

Turkey is a growing shipbuilder and ship repairer. Turkish private sector dockyards aim to reach 1 million tonnes of steel fabrication per year as well as 2 million deadweight of ship construction and 10 million deadweight of maintenance and repair capacity.

The Turkish Shipbuilding Association (GISBIR) is the prominent body in Turkey representing some 40 yards. Approximately 34 yards are in the Tuzla Bay region and we will visit a number of these, embracing the new build commercial and military yards, plus superyachts.

Turkey is particularly strong at providing good quality repair and maintenance to worldwide Ship owners at reasonable costs and, therefore, we will also visit the repair and conversion yards.

To obtain a copy of the booking form and programme please contact Matilda Noble BMEA Secretary (Tel: 020 7928 9199, Fax: 020 7928 6599, Email: bmea@maritimeindustries.org). Places will be restricted - first come first served!
