Training & Skills

apprentices

Government announces more apprenticeships for the industry

The first apprenticeship programme for older adults was unveiled last week by John Denham, the Skills Secretary of State. It was part of an announcement of a massive expansion of training schemes.

He has promised to increase the total number of apprenticeships from 250,000 to more than 400,000 by 2010/11 as part of the government's plans for skills and learning.

Thirty thousand of those places will be targeted at adults aged over 25, in a £90m scheme designed both to give the unemployed a second chance, and to help workers into better jobs.

However, there has been a word of caution from the industry still concerned about the high cost of taking on an adult apprenticeship and the worries of being saddled with an employee who is unsuitable for a long term position within the workforce.

David Rea, Skills Manager at Marine South East, believes that this is a positive move by the Government "I think that any move to increase apprenticeship opportunities is a good thing, it shows a serious commitment to training more mature adults who are more likely to show a real commitment to the industry.

"Often older trainees bring with them a set of skills that they have learned in other sectors and have experience of what is expected of them in the workplace."

IBP Training & Employment have been running an LSC-funded adult apprenticeship training scheme for the marine industry. All 20 places on the scheme have been filled but there may be the possibility of further funding in the future for interested companies.

If you would like to find out more about apprenticeships for young people or adults contact David by emailing david@marinesoutheast.co.uk.

Cad Cam

Dates confirmed for first subsidised CAD/CAM training package

Superyacht UK and Marine South East have been working together to produce a package of subsidised Cad/Cam Catia training specifically for marine companies who have already adopted or are planning to use Catia software in their offices. We have the last few places left on the initial course which must be reserved by 10th December to take advantage of the subsidised offer.

The training is being subsidised by SEEDA (the South East England Regional Development Agency) and is dependent on a minimum number of individuals committing to a 10 day (2 x 5 day blocks) initial training package taking place in the first quarter of 2008 (i.e. January - March 08). Further advanced Catia training packages may also be developed if there is a need for them.

The normal cost for Catia training is £250 per day but we have managed to secure government funding to reduce this cost to £85.50 per day for the first 30 people undertaking the training (provided they are from companies based in the South East region - which includes Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Oxon, Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Medway). The total cost of the 10 day package is therefore reduced from £2500 to £855.

The tutors for the course will be 'marine' specific and the 5 day training blocks will take place at the Regional Resource Centre in Woolston, Southampton with groups of 5 or 6 people. It is envisaged that the initial 5 day fundamental course will be followed by 5 days in people's offices the following week.

Only the first 30 places booked will receive the subsidy and the courses must be undertaken before 31st March 2008.
The first dates for training have now been released and are: CATIA Fundamentals - 21st-25th January 2008 and the CATIA Advanced - Marine Modules - 4th - 8th February. Course will be held at the Marine RRC, Southampton.

If you would like to book a place on the course or find out more please email David Rea on david@marinesoutheast.co.uk or call 02392 472114.

Dubai Boat Show

BMF supports a growing Dubai International Boat Show

The 2008 Dubai International Boat Show March 11 - 15, the largest marine industry exhibition in the Middle East, is a classic showcase of yachts and boats from both local and international builders together with the latest innovations in marine equipment and accessories.

The 2007 edition attracted 25,000 visitors, with buyers coming from the wealthy regional markets. The show space has grown at an impressive 35% per annum for the last 3 years.

Developments for this year's show include an enhanced tent for the Luxury Service & Supplies area which is to be walled by a glass side. The Superyacht UK pavilion is housed next to this new glass walling system overlooking the new open area. Superyacht UK is likely to take 14 stands using a variety of pre-design and built stands.
Current exhibitors in the Superyacht UK pavilion include Summit Furniture, Devonport, Savage Marine Lighting, BMT Nigel Gee, Simcocks Yacht Management, Mini B, Flagship Superyacht Academy and Oceanstyle.

With the Gulf Coast countries now widely recognised as one of world's most robust emerging markets for the boating industry, an industry analyst has estimated that with the dominance of waterfront property and reclamation projects, the sector is on course for growth of up to 30 percent in the next 12 months.

Designing Demand logo

MareNet Designing Demand Marine workshop 29th February 2008

In February MareNet will be teaming up with Designing Demand to hold a workshop looking at the importance of design on increasing profit. This interactive workshop will be taking place on Friday 29th February 2008 at the Port House, Port Solent and will be a half day free workshop.

Designing Demand is an innovative new programme set up to help businesses develop a strategic project, enabling them to use design more effectively. The programme focuses on how design drives improved performance and produces a stronger bottom line. Design can affect every aspect of a business from the first impression created by a company letterhead, the design of a product or packaging, to consistent communication which builds customer loyalty.

Research has shown that for every £100 a design-led business spends on design increases turnover by £225 and shares in design-led businesses have out performed key stock market indices by 200% for a decade.

The Designing Demand programme has been trialled by the Design Council with more than 600 businesses across the UK. Feedback has been extremely positive, for example 88% of those said that their strategic design projects were critical to their business success.

To maximise your profits through better design reserve your space now at the free MareNet interactive workshop, which will demonstrate how the different aspects of design can impact on your business. The workshop will be taking place at The Port House, Port Solent on Friday 29th February 2008 from 8.30-13.30. If you would like to reserve a place email admin@marinesoutheast.co.uk. Sink one for seaford

Cash-injection kick-starts bold campaign to sink a warship in Seaford Bay

Marine South East has pledged its support to the Sink One 4 Seaford campaign at the recent November launch meeting. To help kick-start the campaign Marine South East has offered 50% of the funding for an initial scoping study.

The study is the first step in a bold regeneration project for Seaford and Newhaven, which aims to boost the local economy by sinking an old warship off the coast to create an artificial reef for divers and marine life. The scoping study will examine how the project could be undertaken and assess its financial viability. Simon Powell, Project Manager at Marine South East said;

"This is an incredibly exciting proposal. Creating an artificial reef off the coast of Seaford Bay will breathe life into the Seaford and Newhaven economies. To embark on a project like this takes guts, but it also needs community, financial and government backing to make it happen."

Tony Fowler, local resident and businessman, leads the Sink One for Seaford campaign. He said;

"We have been incredibly busy raising funds to support the scoping study as well as preparing a bid for the £1.5 million needed to deliver this project. Creating an artificial reef will have a significant effect on the future prosperity of Seaford and Newhaven by placing us firmly on the tourism map."

Marine South East has played a pivotal role in raising the profile of the campaign and helping to arrange a launch meeting. Mr Powell added;

"We are delighted to offer our support to help launch the Sink One 4 Seaford project. However, a significant investment is now needed from the South East England Development Agency or other funding bodies to make this project a reality."

Over 280 people attended the launch meeting held at Seaford Bay including, local MPs, councillors, residents and business people as well as marine and diving enthusiasts. Speakers at the event were; Jay Straith from Canadian Artificial Reef Consultants; Mike Leece from M. Leece Associates; Councillor John Freeman the Leader of Seaford Council; Simon Powell from Marine South East; along with representatives from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and Tourism South East.

Marine South East will continue to help publicise and drive this project forward. There are three planned phases to the project and after the scoping study a feasibility study will need to be carried out.

To discuss funding opportunities please contact Simon Powell at Marine South East on 02380 111 592 or email simon@marinesoutheast.co.uk. For further information about Sink One 4 Seaford please contact Tony Fowler by emailing info@sinkone4seaford.co.uk or log onto the website http://www.sinkone4seaford.co.uk .

Cruise Partnership launch

Southampton celebrates Cruise Partnership launch

The newly formed Cruise Partnership was launched last month aboard the iconic cruise liner, the QEII. The event was attended by a number of key business people from the region and local dignitaries including the Sheriff of Southampton.

The excited buzz among guests was generated as much by the substantial amount of interest in the plans of the Cruise Partnership group as by the success it has already managed to achieve while still in its infancy. Speakers from Business Southampton, Cunard, Tourism South East, Southampton Airport (BAA), Cavendish Ships Stores and Associated British Ports (ABP) all contributed to the event:

Sally Lynskey, CEO of Business Southampton who has overseen the partnership's launch, gave an overview of the group. Sally has been involved in many of its projects including, with the support of Associated British Ports (ABP), the installation of the long-awaited directional signs, which are now being progressed, pointing passengers into the port from the M271 motorway.

Jan Halliday, Director of Marketing and Communications at Southampton Airport (BAA), outlined plans for the airport and how a new baggage handling scheme, planned between port and airport, will make life easier for cruise passengers: "What we have seen in the last few years is Southampton becoming very, very successful in the world of cruising. We are looking at ways for cruise passengers to arrive here in the port in a really easy, stress free way, transfer their baggage to the airport and possibly provide those passengers with the opportunity to spend time in this really lovely place. We want to provide them with a bonus day, as Southampton is a resort in its own right. There are, of course, customs and security issues which we will have to iron out, but we hope our vision will be trialled in the spring of 2008. We want visitors to enjoy their time here, and to come back and visit us again!"

The Cruise Partnership has been set up to boost regional tourism and the visitor economy within Southampton and the Hampshire area. The focus of the Partnership will be on maximising the commercial opportunities of the Port City's burgeoning cruise industry for the benefit of the region's economy. In addition the Cruise Partnership will make travelling to Southampton a more pleasurable and rewarding experience and encourage the many thousands of passengers who travel in and out of the port terminals every year to enjoy all that Hampshire has to offer the visitor.

Cruise Partnership Southampton has been established by Business Southampton which also manages and facilitates activities, projects and communications for the initiative. City Champions involved include Carnival (whose Southampton vessel calls include Cunard Line, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises and Ocean Village), Royal Caribbean/Celebrity, Southampton Port (ABP), Tourism South East, Southern Marine Services, The Southampton Hoteliers Association, Southampton Airport (BAA) and Destination Southampton.

manufacturing

Marine engineers could lead the way in green technologies

Business Secretary John Hutton today called on UK manufacturers to respond positively to new opportunities created by emerging markets in the green economy, such as renewable energy and other low-carbon technology.
He announced that a renewed manufacturing strategy will look at how the Government can help British industry take advantage of opportunities presented by tackling climate change while ensuring that the UK is at the forefront of developing and manufacturing new green technologies.

In off-shore wind there is an opportunity for the UK to develop into a global leader, building on its experience in design, installation and operation of off-shore environments. Similar opportunities exist across the green sector, and part of the strategy will examine whether there is more the Government can do to encourage these manufacturers to expand into the renewables and other emerging markets.
Mr Hutton said:

"UK manufacturing has a crucial role to play in helping us accelerate to a low carbon economy. There are many new and exciting technologies available for the UK to take advantage of, including on and offshore wind power, LED lighting, carbon capture and storage, wave and tidal technology.

"In the UK, thousands of new green collar jobs could be created by the potential in wind power alone - from around 8,000 now to more than 27,000 in 2020. Global demand for wind energy generation is growing by 20% each year and I want to help UK manufacturers see these opportunities and exploit the wealth of expertise already at their disposal.”
The Government is committed to helping strengthen the future of UK manufacturing by supporting companies to embrace new opportunities in increasingly competitive global markets.

Mr Hutton unveiled plans for a new Ministerial Advisory Group on Manufacturing. The Group, which will report to Stephen Timms, Minister for Competitiveness, will include the CBI, TUC and EEF, and will participate in renewing the strategy. It will replace the Manufacturing Forum, set up in 2004, which has been instrumental in helping to steer the Manufacturing Strategy over the past three years.

The Ministerial Advisory Group will provide expert advice on key areas such as innovation, skills, training, image and low carbon manufacturing - as well as helping Government address the full range of issues that are important to the manufacturing sector.

Portsmouth Naval Base

The Surface Ship Support Project, Tuesday 04 December 2007

Venue: Marriott City Centre Hotel, Bristol

Commodore Ian Jess RN, Director Surface Warships at Defence Equipment & Support, and his management team will present the emerging business strategy for the support of the current surface fleet including equipment management.
A key pillar of the maritime industrial strategy that emerged from the UK government's Defence Industrial Strategy was the need to review the business strategy for the support of the current surface fleet.

This review has been undertaken against a backdrop of many key issues including the reductions over recent years of the surface fleet, an earlier move at the start of the decade towards competition for warship refits, the impact of competition on the business and investment plans in the traditional refitting yards, the overall resources and capacity available nationally for ship support and the demand for it, an evolution towards incremental updating of capability and other more general aspects of equipment management associated with the through-life support of vessels.

The seminar aims to brief the wider UK naval and maritime defence industries on the current stage that the "SSS" project has reached and on the business opportunities which this now presents especially for SMEs.

All UK industry representatives who are involved in design, procurement, marketing, commercial and other activities associated with through-life support of maritime platforms and of naval equipment and systems are urged to register. The theme of this January MareNet event is the future of the HMS Daedalus site. This is your chance to have your say on how you would like to see the site developed.

Marine South East is organising the event on behalf of SEEDA who wish to hear the marine sector's views on the future of this site, so it's vital that if you might be interested in locating to the site you make it along to this event.
