Funded training to help companies meet future technology needs

To remain competitive in the global market marine companies will need to use advanced technology. Recent reports show that firms are required to adopt the new processes to retain or gain business.

Earlier this year a pilot study of 48 high-value companies in the marine and aerospace sector showed that a majority of firms do not have plans to cope with the use of new technology or the subsequent need to train or re-skill staff. However, a large number did express the view that developing a long term business plan was vital.

In response to this Marine South East has gained funding through the SEEDA Training Pools Programme to help firms prepare for the future. Companies are being offered the opportunity to train staff in the use of automated design and production methods (CAD/CAM) through marine orientated courses based on the use of Catia software. The lead partner for the development and delivery of these will be the Marine Regional Resource Centre (RRC) located in Southampton, with training taking place at the employer's premises or the RRC site.

This opportunity is of particular interest to marine designers, naval architects, super yacht designers and production boat builders who are at the forefront of the use of CAD/CAM technology. It will also be of value to SMEs who wish to up-skill their staff to 3-D methods of design and prepare them to use new production methods.
This project allows companies to prepare for change in good time rather than by a 'knee jerk' reaction. It may also be of benefit to companies who wish to use facilities such as the shared 5-Axis machine planned for the region.

Many companies are wary of investing in training until they realise the benefits of it. To overcome this, the project will be providing a 'tapered training subsidy' with companies enrolling on the initial courses receiving the maximum rebate. All that is asked in return is for companies to complete the training and provide constructive feedback to enable the training provider to develop a course suitable for the marine community.

Courses will commence in January 2008 and early booking is advised. For more information on this or if you wish to participate please contact David Rea at Marine South East on david@marinesoutheast.co.uk or call 02380 766767

wind turbines

Skilled engineers needed for £1.5billion offshore wind farm

Thanet is about to benefit from a jobs boom thanks to the recent go ahead for the London Array wind-farm project. The £1.5billion project will be the largest of its kind in Europe and will require skilled workers, particularly marine engineers. The construction of the turbines is likely to be in Ramsgate prior to them being transported to their final location in the Thames Estuary, meaning an influx of skilled workers to the area.

Ramsgate’s port, being nearest to the wind farm will also be vital for the ongoing maintenance of the turbines. Although the port has yet to be established as the maintenance base of the turbines, it has been confirmed as the lead candidate. The project could potentially lead to the port becoming an international base for off-shore wind farm service, becoming established as a base for skilled workers in this area.

Richard Barron, Marine South East’s East Kent manager is delighted with the decision to go ahead with the project: “this will prove a real boost for the marine economy in this area. But with offshore construction work expected to start in early 2009 we now need to ensure that we have sufficient skilled workers available to take on the challenge ahead.”

Yellowfin unit

Regional Resource Centre helps Yellowfin develop new technology

The Regional Resource Centre (RRC) has recently been involved in a project to work with Southampton-based Yellowfin to help them develop their composite and CAD skills to meet the needs of the development of their revolutionary advanced propulsion system named Variable Surface Drive (VSD).

The unit provides exceptional manoeuvrability, performance, economy and driving satisfaction for many types of marine craft. The system is considered by many to be way ahead of all next-generation propulsion systems.

Recently, during the RRC marine employer engagement programme, Yellow Fin was approached and during a discussion about this new system they decided to go ahead with training in both composite and CAD subjects.

The composite training had to incorporate GRP lay-up and also Gel-coat repair. With a tight lead up to produce the new unit, the RRC set up a range of courses quickly and efficiently to give candidates the best grounding in these subjects.

Yellowfin were delighted with the results, including both the content and delivery of the training, the training process was organised and completed with both types of training delivered locally. The courses were delivered at the Maritime Technology Centre (MTC) in Woolston, the marine waterfront faculty of Southampton City College. All went well and the beneficiaries were extremely pleased with their training and went back to their company to put their newfound skills to work.

With the Southampton Boat Show looming, Yellow Fin had to design and manufacture an eye-catching display stand for their product. The design shop used their CAD expertise to design a framework to carry a rotating VSD and the RRC GRP Graduates built the panels and coated them to clad the working system.

The VSD on its new stand was prominently displayed just inside the southern entrance to the show and initiated many interesting conversations and sales leads for the company.

If you would like to speak to the RRC about training opportunities call Ken Cast on 02380 439 298 or email Kenneth.Cast@Southampton-City.ac.uk

Funding to help companies access greater support for training

Solutions, a Hampshire based training and skills partnership, has recently secured funding from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to help boost its research of training and skill needs of 10,000 local employers.

The research will help give the partnership, of nine leading training providers, a unique insight into common training needs and barriers to training activity. Solutions will investigate skills and training requirements, recruitment and retention issues, and the impact of these issues on a business and its bottom-line.

In addition, the research will ask what would allow the company to act to address training shortfalls.
Initial research has identified some areas where local businesses want training support and these include; literacy and numeracy; management and supervisory skills; communications or IT skills; soft skills such as team working; and job specific skills.

Anna Wood, Solutions Project Director is impressed with the attitude of companies to training. “It is encouraging to see that many companies are planning or providing training for their employees, either in-house, or through a local college, or by using a private training provider. However, many businesses do need support to overcome difficulties which act as barriers to training. Difficulties could include time, finance, and lack of knowledge of training opportunities and who could locally supply the training. By providing personal advice and support we hope to help overcome these.

“The important issue is that not all needs are the same, and we take time to ensure the specific requirements of companies and delegates are addressed. This funding will help us to achieve our aim to support local businesses and to continue to supply excellent training and advice which is suited to Hampshire and Isle of Wight businesses.”

Set up in 2006, Solutions offers ‘one-stop’ access to nine leading training providers’ wide-ranging knowledge, expertise and resources. Solutions approach to training is characterised by emphasis on providing practical and credible results. Solutions also aim to support small and medium sized as well as larger businesses in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

For further information on our range of training courses or to discuss your training needs please contact an advisor at Solutions - The Training and Skills Partnership, on telephone 023 8065 2588 or visit www.solutionstrainingpartnership.com

The Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH) launched its new entrepreneur’s innovation challenge on the 30th October. The "PUSH AHEAD!" Challenge is led by South Hampshire businesses with the aim of developing young peoples’ entrepreneurial skills. Open to schools from South East and South West Hampshire it will challenge teams of Year 9 and 10 students to develop a new and innovative business product, idea or service which will reflect environmental sustainability issues.

Around 100 young people have already signed up for the challenge and will soon begin work on their ideas. They met for the first time this week, when they came together for the event launch where they heard first hand from industry experts in presentations by the Environment Agency, Yellowfin and the winner of ITV’s Tycoon series, Portsmouth based, Iain Morgan.

Students will learn vital business skills such as team-working, communication, decision-making and budgeting They will also gain from working with real business practitioners who will provide support and expertise to assist them as they develop proposals and prototypes for judging in March 2008. Three prize winning teams from each area will then go forward to the South Hampshire Grand Final during May 2008.

Businesses will also gain from the Challenge as it will provide an opportunity to give their staff experience of mentoring, coaching and working with young people and help companies to fulfill their Corporate Social Responsibilities.

Planning & Development

RAF Hythe pic

Hythe site set to become new marine park

It’s just over a year since the former US Army base at RAF Hythe closed in September 2006 with the loss of around 200 jobs. Since then, the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) has been working behind the scenes with local partners, including Marine South East to ensure the successful future of the site.

In early October 2007, SEEDA completed the purchase of the site from the Ministry of Defence. As one of the last available waterside employment locations in The Solent area, Hythe is an important site for the marine industry, and SEEDA's primary aim is to ensure its long-term use for marine employment.

The marine park provides some 22,000 m2 of property set in approximately 4.9 hectares (12 acres) of land. While it was a US Army base, it was used for the servicing and repair of US military vessels and vehicles with a workforce skilled in services such as electronics, shot blasting, marine engineering, fabrication, welding, pipefitting and rigging.

The site is dominated by two large hangars, both with waterfront access, with one benefiting from a unique ship lifting facility which is able to lift up to 950 tonnes. There are also workshops, paint shops and office accommodation as well as working berths, a pier, pontoons and barge platforms.

SEEDA is going to re-open the site at Hythe as a marine business park and ensure it has a long term, sustainable future. The Agency intends to bring the facilities of the site back into use for the benefit of the marine industry and will work to transform it from a single-use military facility to a business park for many marine companies.

More than 200 skilled staff were formerly employed on site and the aim is to bring at least that number of jobs back to the marine park. SEEDA is encouraging marine companies which can make maximum use of the specialist provisions on the site, such as the water access and berths, to move to the marine park. Such marine companies will bring skilled employment and training opportunities to the area, both for ex-employees of the former RAF Hythe and for new entrants to the industry.

If you would like to find out more about opportunities at Hythe contact Paul Flatt, Development Manager at SEEDA by emailing paulflatt@seeda.co.uk or call 01483 484267.

Plans move forward for Seaford Dive Reef

A plan to sink old warships in Seaford Bay to create an artificial reef could put the towns of Seaford and Newhaven on the tourism map.

Anthony Fowler, owner of the Tudor Manor Hotel in Seaford, has come up with a plan to sink ex-naval warships after he was inspired by a similar successful scheme in Plymouth.

He said the idea, which would cost about £1.5 million of pounds, would boost tourism in the area, help prevent erosion of the coastline, encourage marine life and provide a haven for divers.

The project is now commissioning a small scoping study to plan how the project could be undertaken and assess its financial viability. The Sink One 4 Seaford campaign is currently raising the £3700 to fund this work. It is hoped that the South East England Regional Development Agency (SEEDA) will see the economic benefits of the shame and fund its creation as the South West RDA did for the Plymouth artificial reef.

A meeting was held in Seaford on Friday 2 November looking at options for raising these funds. The event included speakers from the Canadian Artificial Reef Company and Mike Leece OBE; there were also representatives from SEEDA, Marine South East, Tourism South East and local authorities.

If you would like to find out more contact Tony Fowler by emailing info@sinkone4seaford.co.uk or log onto the website http://www.sinkone4seaford.co.uk

Shipbuilders and Ship repairers Association Autumn Seminar, Tuesday 13 November

Venue: Egham offices

The SSA is running a series of one day seminars to keep members up to date with some of the most pertinent issues in the industry today. The keynote speaker for the Autumn seminar will be Rear-Admiral Bob Love who heads up the CVF IPT (Royal Navy Future Aircraft Carrier, United Kingdom Integrated Project Team)

On the 25th of July 2007, the Royal Navy confirmed that it had signed a £3.8bn contract for what are now classed as the largest vessels ever sailed by the Royal Navy. The first ships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, are expected to enter service in 2012 and 2015.

This announcement is key for the success of the UK shipbuilding industry in to the next decade, and this not only because there is an opportunity to bid for work on the carriers themselves but because the main ships will need support vessels such as fleet tankers, sea based logistics vessels and fleet support ships that will provide further build work.

This is your opportunity to question the man in charge, ensure that your business benefits from this project and that work stays in the UK.

Other speakers will include:

- SEMTA is the Sector Skills Council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies will be speaking about what they are doing to address this, what they can do for you, and answering your questions.
- Safina will be talking about marine paints and the environmental impacts related to paint issues.
- The UKTI assist businesses in breaking into international markets, their seminar will focus on how they can support you in doing this.
- Cliff Funnel is an expert on the relevance of research to the ship building industry and will be discussing how you can get involved and bid for funding.

China Marine Market Seminar, Thursday 15 November 2007

Venue: Offices of Society of Maritime Industries, London

This is a must for all marine equipment and service companies who are considering entering into this rapidly expanding shipbuilding and repair market and those firms who have just entered or are returning to it and want to know more about doing business with the Shipyards direct, setting up a local office, developing first class agency arrangements or investing in production facilities in China.

Now is the time to enter this important marine market as at present only some 30 per cent of marine equipment is produced locally. To keep apace with the massive demand for world tonnage, China imports the majority of products that go into their new builds and ships being repaired and converted.

Marintec China 2007, Tuesday 27 November 2007 - Friday 30 November 2007

Venue: Pudong Shanghai, China

Marintec China, Shanghai, is the number one marine exhibition for the Chinese market, attracting the all-important ship design centres, shipbuilding, repair and conversion yards, as well as major Chinese ship-owning companies such as COSCO, who operate one of the worlds’ largest fleets. There are also Chinese marine firms exhibiting who seek technology and innovation from British companies by way of joint ventures and partnerships.

It is an ideal opportunity to get close to the procurement teams of the major yards, as well as to talk to Chinese agents who already represent UK marine firms.

There will be a large presence of procurement personnel from the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), who are now the central procurement body for all the shipyards in Southern China. When attending Marintec, the British companies on the UK Pavilion will find that the Chinese Heads of Procurement are not shy about dropping in for a chat and drink at the BMEA business lounge.

European Inland Waterways and Ports Forum, 27-28 November 2007

Venue: Crowne Plaza Hotel, Amsterdam

Explosive growth of trade volumes in Europe's seaports has created capacity problems – which is why the focus is now on inland port and waterway development
That's why Lloyd’s Register–Fairplay's Maritime Events Division (MED) is organising the first European Inland Waterways and Ports Forum.

Increased use of inland waterways to move freight cost-effectively and simultaneously curb emissions and reduce congestion is a policy actively pursued by the EU. Europe has a network of 35,000km of rivers and canals, carrying nearly 500M tonnes of freight annually – and huge investments are planned across the continent to expand and improve inland waterways, ports and terminals that will affect shipping lines, shippers, forwarders and intermodal operators.

Forum sessions will cover:
* European Overview, including present EU projects
* Ports and Inland Waterways
* Using Inland Waterways Today
* Environment and Economics.

Organisations that have already confirmed presentations include the European Commission, European Investment Bank, CEDA, Hamburg Port Authority, European Sea Ports Organisation, Black Sea Coastal Association, Via Donau, TEN-T, European Federation of Inland Ports, the Port of Le Havre Inland and Inland Navigation Europe – the latter also sponsoring the event.

For more information and to register, please contact events@lrfairplay.com or Nigel Dickson or Julie Madigan on 01737 379105.

Mumbai International Boat Show 2008, 28 February to 2 March 2008

Venue: Mumbai, India

The second Mumbai International Boat Show will take place next year February 28 - March 2nd 2008. The British Marine Federation is a strategic partner in the show, providing marketing consultancy, operational guidance and running global space sales.

The 2008 exhibition will be on the same site as the 2007 event and show space is expected to double to near 3000 square metres. The show will again be complemented by a conference, gala dinner and additional events. The marina will be installed at the famous "Gateway to India", and will provide 150 metres of space for on the water exhibits.
The project will be led by International Commercial Manager Tom Chant with operational guidance being provided by Murray Ellis and the National Boat Shows Operations team.

India's economy is booming and economic commentators point to an era of unprecedented growth. In a recent CapGemini - Merrill Lynch study India is the second fastest growing HNI (High Net Worth Individuals) market in the world. Consumer spending on lifestyle and luxury brands is at an all-time high, and that appetite shows no signs of abating. The country also has a strong maritime history, with Mumbai the home of the third oldest yacht club in the world, the Royal Bombay Yacht Club.

"Our position as strategic partner of the Mumbai International Boat Show offers very exciting opportunities for NBS, BMF and all of our members," said Tom Chant. "India has a rapidly developing leisure marine market and the MIBS offers unparalleled opportunities for exhibitors from the UK and around the world to make their mark.

"We look forward to working with the Mumbai team over the coming months to ensure that the show goes from strength to strength."

The debut show in Mumbai last year was deemed a great success. Over 60 exhibitors took the opportunity to display products ranging from small single man canoes to super yacht brokers and builders.

If you would like to discuss the show and the opportunities there, please contact Tom Chant on 01784 223 642 or tchant@britishmarine.co.uk or go to http://www.mumbaiboatshow.com
