News from around the region

Marenet event focuses on the role of ports in the South East

On the 10th July, the theme was ports and overseas investment at the first of two Marenet events held last month. Doug Morrison, Port Director at ABP Southampton made an excellent presentation to the audience, with insight into where the port has come from and their vision for expansion in the future. The presentation included interesting facts about the growth of the port; the different areas of the business – Cars, Cruises, Containers, Fruit and cargo.

There was also a presentation on UKTI and what it can do for Marine Businesses from David Nichols - UKTI Marine advisor for the South East. David include plenty of information about the various schemes given out and how businesses can benefit from UKTI funding and projects.

There was also a presentation from the Home Office on e-borders and what it will mean for businesses in helping create an integrated and secure border for the 21st century, using new technology to manage more people, more quickly and more securely through our borders

If you would like more information on these presentation go to the Marine South East website http://www.marinesoutheast.co.uk/docs/papers/ where you will find all the presentations from the event.

Green issues top the agenda at July Marenet event

Premier Marina at Swanwick played host to the second Marenet event in July, an event which proved to be extremely popular, with delegates attending to hear about the latest news on the topical issue of the environment.

The event started with a delegate tour of the proposed site for the redevelopment of the Swanwick marina, which was then followed by a presentation from the lead architect of the scheme, Iain Lamay. He talked about the green credentials of the project, which will include ground-source heating and extensive use of solar power. The site will also be built taking into account the potential for sea levels to be a metre higher than they are currently. He also spoke about the opportunities for marine companies within the development, including a commercial service area for yachts, opportunities for marine service companies and a large retail area. The scheme will be going to planning in the autumn.

The second presentation was from David Newman of Stirling Consultants, who talked about ways to reduce waste disposal costs in marinas, ports and harbours and how businesses can increase recycling capabilities. Stirling has recently been working with the Port of Dover, Premier Marinas and harbour authorities on the issues of waste and recycling.

Sarah Black from the BMF/RYA led GreenBlue initiative was the next speaker looking at how marine businesses can engage with the initiative. GreenBlue will be appearing at this year's Southampton Boat Show and Marenet is hoping to invite Sarah back to talk in more detail about what GreenBlue is undertaking at a future Marenet event.

Geoff Hill spoke from Grant Thornton on environmental tax credits and how marine companies can benefit from these. He gave examples of schemes that can lead to tax credits, such as businesses using low carbon emission cars and new efficient plant machinery that may attract favourable financial rewards. The final talk was from Matt Cooper from the Carbon Trust who appeared to talk about the marine energy accelerator programme.

Details of all these presentations and how you can find out more are available on the website, just click on www.marinesoutheast.co.uk/docs/papers and click on 24th July Marenet presentations.

Racine meeting in Dover

RACINE project visit Dover

The latest Anglo-French meeting of the Marine South East led RACINE project was held in Dover on 19 July. The project was generously hosted by Dover Harbour in their historic board room where historic figures such as the Duke of Wellington and William Pitt once presided as chairman.

The RACINE project provides a framework to analyse, plan and improve the field of freight logistics. These activities will play a major role in raising the productivity of the logistics sector, and of other sectors that depend on logistic services.

The wide ranging activities of the project include:
- Improving the efficiency of logistics distribution systems with the help of a number of UK supermarkets
- A study looking at the feasibility and advantages of a 'Construction Consolidation Centre' in the Thames Gateway region.
- Engaging with young people through Schools Marine Challenge
- Analysing existing freight routes and port facilities to identify new freight routes and recommend improvements to current practice. A range of logistics services providers and users have already been interviewed.
- Supporting a study of the current and future economic activities on the River Medway.
- Creating an Anglo-French data base of logistics expertise and identifying opportunities for collaboration.

In partnership with the Medway Business Users Association and Medway Council, Marine South East will be helping to launch the Medway Economic Study in September. A dissemination event for the whole RACINE project will be held as part of a Marenet event in December. Details of these events will be circulated through future issues of email news.

Solent Marine Community logo

Solent Marine Community update

Marine South East is pleased to have been awarded funds by Southampton Partnership to take forward Phase II of the Solent Marine Community (SMC) project, which will run until 31st March 2008 and will build on some of the work previously undertaken by Southampton Enterprise Hub.

The project will push into new areas that will benefit the Solent area generally and Southampton specifically, focusing on 3 principle areas:

(i) Facilitation of a Marine Systems and Propulsion micro-cluster
(ii) Facilitation of a Marine Environment and Pollution Control micro-cluster
(iii) Production of a web and hard-copy resource package designed to promote the Solent area to potential investors

The Marine Systems and Propulsion group, facilitated by Graham Clarke, is examining the potential for the development of a hybrid drive system for small craft, whereby a gas turbine could be used to power the craft via an electric motor or hydraulic system. Undergraduates from University of Southampton will be engaged in the research. If developed, this system would create much more useable space in small craft and would therefore offer a significant advantage over conventional drive systems.

Graham commented "The unique opportunity offered by the SMC project is to bring together world-class partners who would not otherwise have the chance to work cooperatively. Our meetings to-date are proving very productive."

Roger Mabbott is facilitating the Marine Environment and Pollution Control group. A major part of the group's activities will involve the establishment of a library of information pertaining to the marine environment and pollution control. Much information and data has been generated by local universities, research establishments and businesses, and the group would aim to create a central repository for this material, providing an exceptional resource to the field. A website will be established to direct interested parties to the library resource and to promote the group and its activities. Roger commented "Southampton has become a world-class centre of excellence for marine pollution control and our work with the Marine Environment and Pollution Control micro-cluster will strengthen this position."

The third strand of the Solent Marine Community project would be the creation of a web and hard-copy resource package for the national and international promotion of the extensive marine capabilities of the Solent area to potential customers and investors. This will incorporate the micro-clusters (to illustrate a dynamic, knowledge-based sector) but will also highlight key companies and capabilities contributing to a diverse maritime presence.

If you would like further information on this project email Stephen Sharpe on stephen@marinesoutheast.co.uk

Training and employment

Weather didn’t dampen spirits at this year’s Schools Marine Challenge

Schools from across the South East took part in this year’s Schools Marine Challenge on 3rd July, bracing themselves against thunder, lightening and torrential downpours. But their spirits weren’t dampened as they competed to win prizes for themselves and their schools.

Organised by the British Marine Federation and Marine South East, the aim of the challenge is to introduce school children to the world of marine engineering. Marine companies across the south east link up with local schools to give the pupils an insight into the world of boat building.

Having spent the last few months designing and building solar powered, electric powered and bio fuel powered boats, the pupils came together at Southwater Watersports Centre near Horsham to race against fellow pupils.

Winners included an overall prize for Kent-based Dane Court School, innovation award for West Sussex-based Midhurst Intermediate School and the teamwork prize went to Newstead School for Girls, based in Kent. Southampton's Applemore College won in the Solar category.

Paul Dean, Head of Design and Technology and Dane Court School was delighted with his pupils' performance: "This is the second year we have taken part and it is proving to be a fantastic way to get kids interested in engineering and the marine sector. They have been working on their boats and designs since October, with the pace of activity really heating up in the last few weeks.

"We had some ups and downs with our designs, but the teamwork on the day was exceptional, I was really impressed with how the kids worked together. We would now like to link up with other local schools taking part and share each other's expertise."

Graham, Clarke, Chairman of the Hampshire Economic Partnership's Marine Policy Group and one of the judges on the day commented: "Four Hampshire schools entered this year's challenge and acquitted themselves well. It is clear that the message is spreading and competitor standards are definitely higher this year. HEP's contribution to staging the event has again achieved the aim of getting young people engaged with the marine sector, with a number of companies being linked with entrants' projects."

Sponsors required for 2008 Schools Marine Challenge

With the 2007 event only just over, the British Marine Federation and Marine South East are already putting plans in place for the 2008 event.

With 15 schools taking place last year, 50% more than the previous year, and a list of schools on the waiting list to take part in 2008, we are looking for companies to help sponsor the event, either by providing funding for a single school to take place or by sponsoring prizes on race day.

This year we had to limit the number of schools, which meant that many were disappointed. Next year we would like to help more schools take part, as the event has proven over the last two years to be a fantastic way of getting youngsters interested in marine engineering.

If you could help with sponsorship, from as little as £100 to sponsor a prize and up to £2000 to sponsor a school's entry into the competition, we would love to hear from you. Without your help we would not be able to hold this important event every year.

For further information please contact Sarah Dhanda at the British Marine Federation on sdhanda@britishmarine.co.uk

Innovation and technology

Stirling consultants

Become a part of a national maritime recycling scheme

Stirling Consultants UK Ltd has over the last 20 months identified an opportunity to enhance the recycling facilities within ports, harbours, marinas, beaches, commercial ports and fishing fleets within the UK.

The idea is to recycle as much waste as possible from resident and visiting vessels or locations generally thereby contributing to a significant environmental benefit, meeting corporate social responsibilities and potentially reducing costs and in some cases providing revenue opportunities for operators.

Some of the more pro active companies/organisations have already started to adopt recycling schemes within their locations. In some cases these appear to be more "add ons" to their hazardous waste obligations rather than fully engineered solutions.

The opportunity has been trialled in Salcombe Harbour with on water facilities and shore side collections to great success and is now being rolled out through various locations throughout the UK.

The learning and experiences of this pilot scheme are all being fed into a national scheme which is currently being rolled out.
Experience has shown that by implementing this type of solution operators should be able to save the region of 35 - 55% of the total waste bill for the year.

The scheme should be live in some 40 - 50 locations by the end of 2007 and 100 by the end of 2008.

AMSI gives Evidence to Science and Technology Committee

The House of Commons' Science and Technology Committee is currently holding a series of evidence sessions under the topic 'Investigating the Oceans'. The Association of Marine Scentific Industries was invited to give verbal evidence, following a written submission, on 13 June alongside The Institution of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, The Society of Underwater Technologies, and the Engineering Physical Sciences research Council.

Mr Richard Burt a member of the AMSI Council parried the MPs' questions and was able to draw on his experience of the US market where the spin out of technology from government research is handled more efficiently. The inquiry is currently focusing on:

- organisation and funding of UK marine science in the polar and non-polar regions;
- the role of the UK internationally, and international collaboration in marine science;
- support for marine science, including provision and development of technology and engineering;
- the state of the UK research and skills base underpinning marine science and provision and skills to maintain and improve the UK's position in marine science and.
- use of marine sites of special scientific interest

It will also include a study of how marine science is being used to advance knowledge of the impact of climate change on the oceans. It is hoped to have a transcript of the session available in due course which will be made available to members through the Society of Maritime Industries web site www.maritimeindustries.org

Renewable Energy Association WATTS 2007 Wave & Tidal Technology Symposium, 4th September 2007

Venue: Northwood House, Cowes, Isle of Wight

The significance of Europe's commitment to meet 20% of its total energy needs from renewables by 2020 cannot be overstated. A 20% energy commitment probably entails a 30% contribution from electricity. The timescale for delivery, coupled with the UK's prime share of Europe's wave and tidal resource, bodes well for this emerging industry - in all its forms!

A main theme of this conference will be considering what contribution wave energy, tidal stream, tidal barrages and lagoons could make to this ambitious new European target. It will set out the policies needed to move the industry form the R& D stage to large scale commercial deployment.

It will assess the progress made by the UK's renewable device developers elsewhere, and contrast our support measures with those abroad. The focus on the climate change agenda can tend to overshadow other benefits of a move to renewable energy - benefits the marine renewables have in spades - such as its contribution to energy security, the unique level of predictability and the massive range of scale in potential applications, spanning kWs to Gigawatts.

This conference will be the first WATTs to debate properly tidal barrages and lagoons. Some see this technology as threatening to other marine renewables - but is this the case? Does the level of concern over the environment justify a repositioning of environmental priorities, of global climate change and conservation?

As well as these high level debates, there will be sessions on deployment, operation and maintenance and case studies describing experiences with operational marine energy devices.

For further information contact REA on Tel: 020 7747 1830 or email info@r-e-a.net

Seaside Heritage, Colourful Past, Bright Future, 16 - 17 October 2007

Venue: St. Mary-in-the-Castle, Hastings, East Sussex

The British seaside is unique, but many of the fragile remnants from its heyday are not well understood and appreciated. Many seaside towns have suffered a downturn in their prosperity marked by physical, environmental and community decline. Very often, the historic fabric that made these towns attractive and exciting is under pressure to adapt to changing holiday tastes and at risk from inappropriate development.

Should we protect more of this precious heritage? Should we protect them at all? What role do these buildings have in regenerating seaside towns in the 21st century? Is physical renewal enough? What else is needed to unlock their economic potential? What lessons can we learn from other countries? And what should local, regional and national organisations do?

English Heritage is hosting a two-day conference on 16 and 17 October 2007 in Hastings to celebrate the colourful history of our seaside towns and examine ways that their heritage can contribute to the economy, quality of life and regeneration.

This is an essential conference for anyone who cares about the management, regeneration, promotion and conservation of seaside towns or simply with an interest in their history and future.

If you would like to register to receive booking information on Seaside Heritage, contact Helen Charlton by email helen.charlton@sam-culture.com or call 01273 882112. Or if you would like to find out more log on to http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/seasideheritage

Supported by the Australian Ministry of Defence and the Australian Navy, it is the major maritime exhibition for the region. The four day event comprises an exhibition, conference, and the visit of senior staff delegations and will showcase a full range of maritime and naval technologies, services and products

The exhibition is open to exhibitors world-wide from companies or groups of companies which design, manufacture, maintain, repair or modernise naval equipment, including naval aviation equipment, refit ships, support fleets, train personnel, and promote, sell or provide services, or produce documentation and journals connected with the naval and maritime industry.

The British Naval Equipment Association has been officially appointed as the Group Organiser for the UK Group. Companies are invited to join the UK Group, either by taking space only or by exhibiting in the BNEA pavilion using the Group shell scheme of superior design.

The advantages of joining the UK Group are:
- Companies that are defined by the European Union as small to medium sized enterprises (SME) may be eligible for a grant of up to £1,500 for the costs of their participation.
- BNEA, as the group organiser, deals direct with the Pacific 2008 exhibition organisers, co-ordinates payments, appoints agents and stand contractors, produces the UK Group catalogue, briefs the exhibitors, etc.
- Participants exhibit as a co-located Group either from self-build stands or in the BNEA pavilion of superior design which attracts visitors and international delegations.
- Office facilities and a business lounge exclusive to the UK Group are provided and a prime location within the exhibition hall for the UK Group has already been reserved.
