Mark Merritt, Formula Yaht Spars

South East company takes top honours at Paris Boat Show

The winners of the second Laureat Nautique Franco-Britannique Award were announced during the Paris Boat Show last month. Overall winners were South East company Formula Yacht Spars and their French partner Black Flag Composite. The Franco-British award is supported by the UKTI and organised by the British Marine Federation (BMF) and Federation des Industries Nautiques (FIN) and recognises marine companies from France and the UK that have entered into successful partnerships.

Formula Yacht Spars, based in Lymington, Hampshire and Black Flag Composite of Mudaison, Montpellier were recognised for having shown a strong corporate drive to create strategic alliances, build expertise and knowledge across borders. The partnership has led to impressive growth in turnover, improved client service and enhanced credibility in the market place.

The partnerships between Performance Sailcraft (UK) and Direct Sailing (France) and Barton (UK) and Plastimo (France) also received highly commended recognition from the judges during the evening’s celebrations.

Toby Allies, Director of International Development at the BMF commented, “Formula Yacht Spars and Black Flag Composite are a great example of how companies can create new partnerships to drive forward innovation, deliver better service for clients and provide exciting opportunities for their staff. The BMF looks forward to continuing working and supporting them and all the highly commended companies as they continue to develop their businesses in the highly competitive international leisure marine market.”

Mark Merritt, Managing Director of Formula Yacht Spars, added, “This award was a real bonus in an exciting year for Formula in which we have undergone considerable change and expansion. The acquisition of Black Flag Composite, a specialist composite spar maker in Southern France, has given us an important foothold in an extremely active market and strengthened our team of composite experts. This award has come as a very pleasant surprise to us and is in effect only the beginning. It is also a strong indication that we are now a formidable force in the European market and we are looking forward to the New Year with considerable enthusiasm”

Funding available to help companies develop innovative projects

Through the CommercialiSE framework, PoCKeT provides funds for early stage business ideas. PoCKeT is specifically for "proof of concept" development where the knowledge and expertise of a Higher Education Institution (HEI) or Public Sector Research Expertise (PSRE) can assist to make them a commercial reality.

The CommercialiSE framework provides integrated support for ground breaking business ideas that exploit the South East knowledge base. PoCKeT is co-financed by the South East of England Development Agency (SEEDA), the European Social Fund (ESF) and CommercialiSE.

Designing demand logo

Free technology Venture workshops on offer

The Designing Demand Innovate programme starts with a 1 day Technology Venture Workshop – which is being held at the Jubilee Library in Brighton on 16th January 2007 or 30th January 2007 at the Design Council in London.

The aim of the Technology Venture Workshop is for companies to have the chance to learn about design – and to give them sufficient information to consider whether to apply for the full Innovate programme.

The Innovate programme itself consists of a three day workshop taking place over 2 consecutive days in 1 week and the third day the following week. These workshops are run by a Design Associate and three support designers who work with the successful applicants to identify opportunities for improving their business through design. In the following 12 months the Design Associate will meet the company on a monthly basis to support them with the implementation of their Design Opportunities. At the end of the programme there will be a close-out event which reviews the work carried out and also allows the company the opportunity to meet again with their peers from the initial 3 day workshop.

The target audience for the Innovate programme is ambitious technology entrepreneurs - within 3 years of initial start-up with no more than 14 employees and based within the South East of England Development Agency (SEEDA) region.

Alumni of the Innovate programme reported that their increased use of design had important benefits:

80% changed strategic direction becoming customer focused rather than technology focused
75% invested significantly in design and are confident of a return on investment
65% changed branding and communication giving them stronger market positioning
80% reported a changed mindset, culture and vision
50% increased their ability to raise investment finance
50% saw better management or reduction in commercial risks and have a more positive attitude to the sustainability of the business
50% significantly changed the balance and composition of the company’s skills
35% changed product or service.

If you would like to register for one of the free Technology Venture Workshops please visit http://www.designingdemand.org.uk. If you have any questions please contact Claire Harper on 01865 811550

Marketing – a series of seminars to help you better target your market

How well do your key decision makers understand your markets? . Are your strategic decisions based on carefully executed market research or on ‘gut feel’?
As supply chains globalise, it is essential for South East manufacturers to maintain and exploit a ‘competitive advantage’, working closely with key customers to anticipate and satisfy their changing requirements.

Introducing basic techniques such as market research, market segmentation, competitor benchmarking and product positioning will help you:
. Better understand your competitive advantage and maintain it by tactical selection of new products and services
. ‘Get the message across’ better with smarter content and targeting of your business communications
. Better identify new market opportunities

MAS South East has developed this series of seminars to help manufacturers develop their marketing skills. The seminars are delivered by an experienced marketing professional, and contain elements relevant to both domestic and
international marketing.

They are of a practical nature, assuming limited prior knowledge, and contain many ideas readily adopted back at the workplace. Each delegate is issued with comprehensive reference notes. This year MAS is able to offer this excellent programme at a cost of £25.00 per delegate for each seminar, or £100.00 for each delegate if they choose to attend all of the six seminars in this series

Seminar subjects include:
Planning for success
Targeting the right customers
Researching export markets and buyer behaviour
Winning at new products
Pricing and distribution channels
International Marketing and promotions

Portsmouth Naval Base

Minister boosts campaign to save Portsmouth Naval Base

Senior Minister Derek Twigg MP spoke out at a recent meeting in the Houses of Parliament about the future of Portsmouth naval base and the vital role it has to play in the future of the city. The comments of the defence minister came as a massive boost to campaigners fighting to save the home of the navy from closure.

Mr Twigg cited the base's role as home to the new Type 45 destroyers and super-aircraft carriers as well as the Operation Dreadnought cost-cutting drive as major feathers in its cap.

He was speaking during a debate in Westminster Hall in the Houses of Parliament called by Portsmouth North MP Sarah McCarthy-Fry on the future of Portsmouth naval base.

Mr Twigg was faced by a united cross-party coalition of MPs from the area, including Labour's Ms McCarthy-Fry, Lib Dem Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock and Fareham Tory Mark Hoban, as well as Tory defence spokesman Julian Lewis. He insisted ministers needed to wait for the recommendations from the Navy Review Board, which is looking at cuts that could see the closure of one of the country's three navy bases.

Mr Twigg raised hopes by saying the board should take note of future plans for Portsmouth and the £30m savings highlighted through Operation Dreadnought, which has been drawn up by the base. He said: 'Under current plans, Portsmouth will be the home of the new Type 45s and aircraft carriers. The review board needs to take note of this. Also, the naval base's savings under Operation Dreadnought need to be given due weight by the review board.'

But he added that the savings still needed to be validated and said all the options, including keeping all three bases or closing all three bases, were still open.

However, his positive comments about Dreadnought came just a day after the commander of the base, Commodore David Steel, also said that the plan had been well-received.

And in her speech, Ms McCarthy-Fry concentrated on the economic and military arguments for keeping the Portsmouth base open.

She pointed out that Portsmouth was the home for 60 per cent of the surface fleet and most Royal Navy families were housed in the area. She said it was the only location where the new carriers could be re-armed on site and that it was also the home of shipbuilding with VT and maintenance with Fleet Support Ltd.

'Portsmouth is a one- stop shop for the Royal Navy, which makes it unique,' she said.

Portsmouth News is running a campaign to save the Base, if you would like to voice your concerns on this issue email handsoff@thenews.co.uk. All responses will be presented to Defence Secretary Des Browne

Gold Anchor

Latest South East marina awarded gold anchors

Thames and Kennet marina has recently been awarded four gold anchors by The Yacht Harbours Association as a result of its ongoing programme of improving quality and value.

The Gold Anchor Award is designed to encourage high standards in the operation of marinas, and has recently undergone a thorough revision with the aim of raising standards higher still. The award of four gold anchors to Thames & Kennet Marina reflects the continuing commitment to improving services, facilities and the quality of management at the marina.

The Gold Anchor Award Scheme was established to improve the standards of facilities available to all boat owners. Marina operators, who are members of the association, may enter the scheme for assessment. The level of the awards range from three to five gold anchors and are a sign of a quality marina, whilst the number of anchors indicates the level of the facilities available. The scheme is purely voluntary and is designed to bring the industry to the forefront of boating and to encourage better standards.

On entry, arrangements are made for the inspection to take place on the site, to assess the standard of the facilities available. The assessors inspecting will then determine the award level, 1 to 5 gold anchors (5 being the highest award).

If you are interested in the scheme and would like to find out more call 01303 814434 or visit http://www.yachtharbourassociation.com

For its final event Marenet has arranged a tour of the diesel submarine HMS Alliance when you’ll be able to experience what life was like for the 65 submariners that worked and lived on the sub.

Superyacht tour, BMF

Superyacht UK Tour of Excellence 2007, 6th- 9th March

Venue: South East and South West

The Superyacht UK Tour of Excellence is an excellent opportunity for UK companies to showcase their products and services to an invited group of international superyacht delegates, including project managers, designers, naval architects, owners representatives, shipyards, brokers and captains. In March 2006 14 companies were visited and 60 companies showcased their products and services and networked with the delegates. Previous Tours have resulted in orders worth in excess of £60m for the major yards and smaller businesses in the UK supply chain.

In March 2007 the international delegates will follow a tight schedule of yard visits and also a number of optional company visits. In addition we are arranging two evening showcase events to enable UK suppliers of services and UK products to meet with the delegates in an informal mini-exhibition/drinks reception/dinner format. The aim of the showcase events is to expose the international delegates to high quality British companies operating in the Superyacht sector supplying both equipment and services.
