Learn more about the business opportunities for Multi-Use Platforms at Sea
Marine South East held a constructive workshop at Seawork 2018 to explore business opportunities for Multi-Use Platforms at sea under the auspices of two projects being coordinated by Marine South East; ENTROPI (Enabling Technologies and Roadmaps for Offshore Platform Innovation)and OPEC (Offshore Platform for Energy Competitiveness).
The event attracted interested parties who contributed useful feedback on potential business opportunities and how their organisations might contribute to the further development of this exciting concept.
Of particular interest was the presentation by Silvia Martin Imholz from ENTROPI partner PLOCAN who are a research and innovation organisation based in the Canary Islands. http://www.plocan.eu
PLOCAN have prepared an informative video describing the work they are doing on the oceanic platform of the Canary Islands and opportunities for offshore Multi-Use Platforms.

New vessels selected for CLINSH emission reduction project for inland waterways
CLINSH is a European funded project with a consortium of international organisations working together to promote clean inland waterway transport. Marine South East is the English partner of this European LIFE Program funded project.
The main objective of CLINSH is to improve air quality in urban areas by accelerating emission reductions in Inland Waterway Transport.
The number of participating vessels in the project will soon be expanded as contracts are being finalised with skippers selected during a second tender round. Suitable ships can still register to take part if they can meet with the requirements.
26 ships were selected in the first tender round and a further 21 can be signed up to be fitted with measuring equipment to record the emissions for one to two years. This valuable information with assist the project in working out environmental performance and operational costs going forward.

Updates from Onboard Erasmus project regarding apprenticeship models for the Ports and Logistics sector
It is widely recognised that Vocational Education & Training (VET) can reduce high youth unemployment levels and through initial training of young workers, promote a better match between learning outcomes of the training paths and the enterprises skills’ needs.
The ONBOARD Project is aiming to design, implement and validate an apprenticeship's model for the ports and logistics sector supporting the development of a Vocational Education & Training (VET) profile and curriculum through partnership with maritime businesses.
The project is led by INOVA+ and has partners from Portugal, the UK and Ireland, including Marine South East.

Improving Productivity for Businesses - apply for funding
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has up to £2 million to invest in trials of innovative ways to improve productivity for micro, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs).
The funding is part of the government's Business Basics Programme, announced as part of the modern Industrial Strategy.
The aim of the programme is to identify and test ideas that encourage SMEs to adopt existing technology and management practices that would improve their productivity.

The competition will fund 2 types of project, proof of concept or feasibility studies and full-scale trials. If a proof of concept is successful, there is potential to access further funding to move the project into a full-scale trial in the future.
Projects should look at how to increase the adoption of technology and business practices to improve the productivity of SMEs. This could include:
* adopting existing technology, such as accountancy, CRM or HR software, cloud computing or payment systems
* adopting modern business practices, such as leadership and management capabilities or developing an innovation culture
* a combination of the 2 approaches above
Ideas could include increasing awareness about the benefits of technology, how to create interest in adopting new technology and business practices, making the benefits of new technology clearer and providing advice and support.
* the competition is open, and the deadline for applications is at midday on 4 September 2018
* projects can be led by a business, public sector, academic, charity or trade organisation working alone or with partners
* Innovate UK expect projects for full trails to have costs of up to £400,000 and to last between 3 and 12 months
* Innovate UK expect proof of concept projects and feasibility studies to have costs of up to £60,000 and to last between 3 and 6 months
* businesses could attract up to 70% of their project costs

The Employees' Support In Skills programme for the Solent areas is available to marine business that employ less than 250 employees. The impact of skills shortages is a significant issue for all employers but can have a greater effect if your business is an SME.
This new initiative is co-funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Skills Funding Agency (SFA), and is managed by the CSW Group. The funding is available to all SMEs across the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership area.

* A valuable assessment of the skills profile of your employees and how this relates to your business
* Bespoke training, for eligible employees aged 18+, in line with your business needs
* Access to professional, leadership and management training

Apprentice Mentoring Workshop, 5th September 2018, Southampton
British Marine, with support of the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), are offering two workshops (one full day, followed by a one half day) for those people who have an active role in mentoring apprentices.
The workshops are interactive and thought provoking and enable those attending to develop their mentoring skills.
Workshop one (full day) - Developing Mentoring Skills to Support Apprentices. This workshop aims to provide an understanding of the skills and behaviours needed for successful mentoring.
Workshop two (half day follow up) - Reviewing Mentoring Skills to Support Apprentices. This is run approximately two to three months after the first. The second workshop requires delegates to bring their own scenarios and experiences to the workshop and discuss progress with peers, and will act as a refresher on the skills and techniques that can support their mentoring practice going forward.
The first workshop will be held on 5th September 2018 with the follow-up half day workshop taking place on 11th December 2018.
