Email News July 2016

Welcome to the July 2016 Email Newsletter from Marine South East

Marine South East is exploring options for maintaining its involvement in European initiatives on marine innovation, and for continuing to participate in EU projects, possibly via an alliance with one of our European partners. We are aware that many firms in the Solent maritime cluster will want to maintain their European interests as well, so continuing engagement in this uncertain period is essential.

Women in innovation: £200,000 for infocus funding awards

Innovate UK are looking to identify and nurture the next generation of brilliant innovators. Women are under-represented in the field of innovation, and that needs to change.

Innovate UK believe as a nation we're failing to harness, capitalise on and celebrate the entrepreneurial talent of female innovators to the detriment of our economy. They estimate that boosting female entrepreneurship could deliver approximately £60bn extra to the UK economy.

To address this problem Innovate UK are launching a special award for women working in innovation, and that's where you come in.

Women with potential to be successful entrepreneurs and leaders in innovation can apply for support and funding to help them to succeed.

The infocus Awards will celebrate and reward women working across 4 key sectors - Materials & Manufacturing, Health & Life Sciences, Infrastructure Systems, Emerging & Enabling Technologies.

This is the first women only Innovate UK competition and is part of a new 'infocus' initiative to encourage diversity in innovation.

Twelve women will benefit from a valuable tailor-made package of support and four of these will each receive a £50,000 grant to get her brilliant idea up and running.

Could it be you? Could it be someone you work with? Who do you know who could fly the flag for women in innovation?

Competition Information:

* the competition opens on 1 June 2016 and the deadline for registration is noon on 24 August 2016
* the awards are open to any woman in the UK working in business innovation in any of Innovate UK's four sectors

COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer for Blue Growth - first year success

The COLUMBUS project, looking to improve knowledge transfer for blue growth, completed its first year recently and has been successfully promoting its awareness at a number of key events across Europe.

The project has been represented at major events such as the European Maritime Day in Finland, Ocean Week in Norway, European Geosciences Union General Assembly in Austria, European Seafood Expo in Belgium and Oceanology International in the UK; and has successfully interacted with partners from all stakeholder groups including policy, industry, society and the scientific community.

COLUMBUS has a dedicated Work Package entitled "Communication, Engagement and Knowledge Transfer towards a Blue Society", led by Nausicaá in France, which supports the implementation of COLUMBUS through dissemination and other strategic communication/engagement activities.

Objectives include enhancing the visibility and impact of marine and maritime research in society; strengthening the exploitation of knowledge and technological developments in the marine and maritime sector; and, ensuring the effective communication of the project's objectives, activities and results.

In May last year, the European Commission (EC) launched an Information Sharing Platform on Marine and Maritime Research http://cordis.europa.eu/packs/marine-information-platform_en.html to support "Innovation in the Blue Economy". In addition there is more information on the European Parliament's Resolution of September 2015 on "Untapping the potential of research and innovation in the blue economy to create jobs and growth". The platform, currently in its pilot stage, shares available research data and key results from EU-funded projects related to the marine and maritime research sectors. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?type=TA&language=EN&reference=P8-TA-2015-0291

In cooperation with the respective Project Coordinators of the 31 FP7 Oceans of Tomorrow projects, the COLUMBUS project collected over 500 Knowledge Outputs, of which 456 exploitable results were extracted to populate this pilot platform. This collection of knowledge from research projects facilitates the uptake of new ideas, research results, data, products and services by industry, policy makers, civil society and other interested parties. This platform is an example of sharing results from European funded projects as soon as possible; thus supporting the concept of Open Science.

The COLUMBUS project is focused on utilising a novel Knowledge Transfer methodology to provide support and solutions for Blue Growth and implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The Knowledge Outputs collected to support the implementation of the EC's pilot platform will be analysed by COLUMBUS where they will be considered for further transfer to target users.

To keep up-to-date on future events where COLUMBUS will be represented, make sure to visit the COLUMBUS website often. To organise an introduction to one of the COLUMBUS partners at an event, please contact the Project Manager, Cliona Ní Cheallacháin (email: cliona@aquatt.ie or tel: +353 (0) 1 644 9008 or visit http://www.columbusproject.eu/

IMarEST's third beinnial European International Submarine Races

The third biennial European International Submarine Race (eISR) will be held from the 6th to the 15th of July 2016 in Gosport, England. Teams of University students will race their human-powered submarines against the clock around a demanding slalom course in a unique sporting and engineering challenge.

The European International Submarine Races (eISR) are an initiative where IMarEST challenges teams of university students to design, build and race human-powered submarines against the clock on an out-and-back course. The concept combines engineering design challenge with technical skill development and sets them in a unique and exciting sporting competition.

The initiative is designed to encourage more students to consider careers within the marine sector. This is one of the ways that IMarEST is pushing its 'Sea Your Future' campaign to inspire the next generation and show them the opportunities available in marine STEM careers.

The basic rules of the sport are straightforward - teams must design, build and race flooded submarines piloted by a single scuba diver, who must be fully enclosed within the hull of the machine. All propulsion power must be provided by the diver during the race (i.e. no energy storage devices such as flywheels or batteries are allowed), but otherwise the design rules are open to whatever innovation teams decide to use.

The eISR is also about developing real, practical engineering skills. In the funding-constrained university environment, the practical elements of curricula have been replaced with theoretical calculation and computer modelling. A submarine big enough to contain a diver is a real, tangible machine, and the mechanisms have to produce and take real forces. At the same time, the challenge isn't so great that the students can't make the parts themselves - this provides an invaluable learning experience as they see their CAD drawings come to real life.

Finally, the competition is about working as a team in a time-critical, adrenaline-charged atmosphere. During the build-up to the race, the students learn to exploit each other's' strengths, and design into their machines what they think they will need to succeed at the races. In initial testing, they learn where the weaknesses are, and make considered adjustments to their designs. Then, once they arrive on the racecourse, and really put their machines to the test, they invariably find new challenges, and have to bring out their engineering knowledge to find solutions on-the-fly with limited facilities. Such experience is invaluable to them later in their careers, regardless of the direction they take.

To meet the teams please visit:
http://www.subrace.eu/

For more information on sponsorship opportunities, please contact Samantha.carter@imarest.org or marketing@imarest.org

A Careers' Day will also be held on Saturday 9th July at Hilsea Lido, Gosport, where sponsors will have the chance to talk about the broad range of opportunities within their organisations. The Careers' Day is open to all ages and will include live-demonstrations of the human-powered submarines.
