Marine South East partners in new South Coast Centre of Excellence for Satellite Data

A new centre of excellence for satellite data, which will be hosted at the University of Portsmouth ie being set up by a consortium of partner which includes Marine South East.

The new Centre of Excellence will allow the south coast business community to tap into satellite technology that could improve their products and services, for example, developing technology to help robot submarines use live satellite data to inform their route through the ocean - similar to drivers using live traffic updates.

The South Coast Centre of Excellence in Satellite Applications will be led by the University of Portsmouth's Institute of Industrial Research. It is co-funded by Satellite Applications Catapult and the UK Space Agency.

The new centre will use data from thousands of man-made satellites which orbit Earth. Some satellites take pictures of the planet that help meteorologists predict weather and track hurricanes, others are used mainly for communications, such as beaming TV signals and phone calls around the world. A group of more than 20 satellites make up the Global Positioning System, or GPS.

Experts at the centre will work with industry, particularly small businesses, to ensure they can use satellite data to make new products and services commercially available. Its market focus areas cover maritime and marine and autonomous systems.

Partners involved in the project include the Universities of Brighton and Southampton, National Oceanography Centre, Marine South East, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult and Hampshire County Council.

Join the UK pavilion at Posidonia 2016

The Society of Maritime Industries is inviting UK marine companies to join the British pavilion at Posidonia 2016 - a leading marine equipment and services exhibition.

Greek ship owners and operators lead the world by controlling the world's largest commercial fleet, making up some 20% of total world deadweight tonnage. The Greek-flag element of their huge fleet on its own currently accounts for over 40% of merchant shipping sailing under EU flags.

The market strength of Greek operators is further underlined by their purchasing billions of dollars of second-hand vessels. Since 2007 the Greeks have ordered over 4,000 newbuilds, the most in the world, even in these difficult times. Almost half of all newbuild LNG's are Greek owned.

Keeping this huge commercial armada in business requires Greek owners to spend upwards of US$ 4 billion per year just on repairs, drydocking, conversions, equipment upgrades and general maintenance. The increasing demands of the ISM code and ever-more-demanding regulatory standards have seen major investments by fleet Operators in cutting-edge navigation and other shipboard technology and in customised software and IT systems both ashore and afloat

With modern second hand tonnage entering the world market, the Greeks are continually upgrading their fleets as they are in the main cash rich and taking the opportunity to buy quality tonnage at very keen prices. This tonnage should need maintaining, converting and upgrading work by British Equipment Firms. All in all, the Greek maritime community represents a huge market for hundreds of suppliers of equipment and services, for dozens of Shipbuilders, Converters and Shiprepairers, and for many financial, insurance and other institutions to which they have traditionally looked for support in pursuing seaborne trade. The major international Ship builders from around the globe are also present in large numbers at Posidonia.

A date for your diary – EXPOSURES Workshop - Wednesday 29th June 2016

The ‘EXPOSURES’* project is currently working to establish a new data value chain that builds on low-cost drones (autonomous underwater vehicles) and advanced data analytics to seamlessly connect surveyors, marine analysts and authorities using the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT).

Initially focusing on seabed monitoring, a field trial of the technology is taking place during April 2016 at the 'SUNRISE' 'IoT' facility in Porto, Portugal. During this, Internet-connected underwater drones will be sending observations to the EXPOSURES platform and subsequently demonstrating how the output data can be used with simulation application platforms (such as Open Telemac) to simulate harbour seabed morphology. Using the EXPOSURES technology to deliver a more efficient process, harbour management stakeholders will be able to make better informed decisions about the actions needed to maintain the safe and effective running of their harbour.

Establishment of the technology will enable it to be used across a broad range of marine applications having significant socio-economic importance. To assist with this, the project partners, IT Innovation (University of Southampton) and Marine South East facilitate the EXPOSURES 'Interest Group'. Through this potential end-users and other interested parties from the marine industry, government agencies and scientific community are able to engage with the project and contribute directly to developments maximising applicability, commercial potential and fostering market creation.

Following completion of the 'EXPOSURES' field trial, a Workshop is being held on Wednesday, 29th June 2016. Hosted by HR Wallingford (http://www.hrwallingford.com ) it will cover the project's progress and consider the way ahead. As part of this, 'Interest Group' members will be invited to participate and use their professional experience to contribute and discuss the aspects they feel are relevant for the development and use of this innovative technology.

Please reserve this date in your diary and when the event program is finalised an invitation will be sent to 'Interest Group' members.

If you aren't a group member but would like to join and receive an invitation, please visit

http://www.groupspaces.com/EXPOSURES/
