Marine Computational Fluid Dynamics course, Southampton

SMMI and Lloyd’s Register Marine are embarking on a series of professional development training courses. The first of these focuses on computational fluid dynamics that has now become an established tool for naval architecture and marine science.

This prestigious three day course will provide delegates with an introduction to the key principles of CFD applied to the marine sector through practical examples.

The course will equip delegates with the knowledge to objectively assess CFD work and gain an understanding of how to use CFD appropriately for maximum advantage.

Who will benefit?

Engineers and naval architects who are involved in research, design or development of naval or marine systems who wish to acquire background knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics, learn how best practice CFD is applied in the marine industry, and learn how CFD may lead to novel designs and/or faster time-to-market.

Pre-requisites for the course are a basic level of engineering and naval architecture knowledge as well as some IT literacy.

However, no prior CFD experience or knowledge will be required. The course will start with a brief overview of the fluid dynamic principles.

The course will be delivered by leading academics in the field from Southampton University Maritime Engineering and Ship Science department and practising naval architects and engineers from Lloyd's Register who use CFD in industry on a daily basis. The content will be presented in a lecture format incorporating live demonstrations and hands on practical examples that attendees will be coached through to develop competence.

The course will take place at the Boldrewood Innovation Campus which brings together the engineering excellence from the University of Southampton and Lloyd's Register in the largest research collaboration of its kind in the UK. Attendees will also tour the new 138m towing tank on site and have the opportunity to informally network at the course dinner.

Delegates will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course.

COLUMBUS project ambassadors driving impact for Blue Growth

For the first three days of March 2016, over 50 participants will converge in Brussels to review and learn from the first year of the COLUMBUS project, the European Commission’s flagship Blue Growth initiative and representative of their most substantial investment in Knowledge Transfer to date.

This event is the first of three annual international conferences hosted by COLUMBUS that will gather project partners, knowledge generators and end users, as well as Knowledge Transfer specialists, to discuss on-going COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer.

This event represents the first time that COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer Fellows and partners meet the newly-formed External Advisory Board. Boasting 14 members, the External Advisory Board comprises members with abundant experience in the challenges affecting the EU's Blue Growth agenda, representing a vast range of highly-relevant backgrounds and organisations: AZTI Tecnalia, Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), Dublin City University, the European Fisheries Control Agency, the European Marine Board, European Parliament, the German Marine Research Consortium (KDM), JPI-Oceans, Marcom, Nord University, the OSPAR Commission, Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique, Researchfish, Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

"As ambassadors to the project, the members of the External Advisory Board will promote COLUMBUS' goals to relevant policy, industry, scientific and societal actors to ensure visibility and consequence", explains Cliona Ní Cheallacháin, COLUMBUS Project Manager, "This will guarantee that COLUMBUS meets its overarching objective, to ensure that applicable knowledge generated through EC-funded science and technology research is transferred effectively to advance the governance and economic growth of the European marine and maritime sectors."

Clusters, Collaboration and a Common Blue Voice, 16th March 2016, OI London

Clusters, Collaboration and a Common Blue Voice is an open networking event taking place on Wednesday 16th March 2016 at Ocean International 2016, 13:00-14:30 in the Trade and Innovation Theatre at the exhibition.

The Maritime Alliance (TMA), is hosting this session which will start with short presentations from leaders of active BlueTech clusters in several countries leading to a moderated discussion with the audience.

Marine South East has been working closely for the past two years with The Maritime Alliance, based in San Diego, on setting up a platform for joint international initiatives and investment in the Blue Economy.

Blue Economy and BlueTech clusters are the appropriate entities to coordinate academia, government, and industry on a region-by-region and country-by-country basis.

International cluster collaboration is essential so we can learn from each other, help each other and our respective members, and to promote a coordinated Blue Voice at national and international levels. The technical ability and will to develop ocean industries is growing and international collaboration is critical to promote win-win opportunities for our clusters and nations.

Speakers at the event will include:

* Stephane Claisse - Deputy Director, Pole Mer Mediterranee (France)

* Dr. Valerie Cummins - Director, Irish Maritime and Energy Resource Cluster (Ireland)

* Gordon Gale - Executive Director, Ocean Technology Council of Nova Scotia (Canada)

* Greg Murphy - Executive Director, The Maritime Alliance (US)

* Jonathan Williams - CEO, Marine South East (UK)

The event will be facilitated by Michael B.Jones, President of The Maritime Alliance.
