World's first marine engine running on glycerine attracts crowds at Seawork

The world's first marine engine to be run using the exceptionally clean fuel of glycerine was successfully demonstrated at Seawork for the GLEAMS project which is being project managed by Marine South East.

For the duration of the exhibition visitors were able to see the glycerine fueled marine engine operating aboard an Alicat workboat owned by Dalby Offshore.

The project's test engine, a Cummins C44-D5 generating set was displayed as a 'stand-alone' system with emissions monitoring equipment providing real-time analysis of exhaust gas. By operating on a 'dual-fuel' system visitors were able to see the significant reduction in emission levels when the engine was switched from diesel to glycerine operation.

Additionally, the project's second 'Can my vessel run on this?' workshop was held in the Seawork Conference facility. The keynote presentation 'Shipping Visions on the Horizon' was given by Dr Paul Gilbert (University of Manchester) who spoke of the challenges faced by the maritime sector in meeting the forthcoming emissions legislation and possible ways to mitigate its impact.

Professor Pat Harvey (University of Greenwich) described the 'Glycerol Supply Chains' and the work being done to establish them. This included the production of glycerol from microalgae.

John McNeil (Aquafuel Research) spoke on 'Glycerine -Fuel?' and presented the results of the formal emission tests which have been conducted by Redwing Environmental on the project's Cummins marine engine.

David Blake (Business Development, Alicat Workboats) spoke about the considerable interest the GLEAMS engine had attracted from designers, engineers and operators who had visited the Alicat Workboat.

The presentations file from the 'Can my ship run on this?' can be downloaded from 'GLEAMS Interest Group' web site which is free to join at:
http://groupspaces.com/GLEAMSInterestGroup/join/

The GLEAMS project has already attracted global interest from vessel operators, engine manufacturers and bunker providers as well as people keen to learn about this sulphur-free alternative fuel.

The GLEAMS (Glycerine for Engines and Marine Sustainability) Project is co-funded by the Technology Strategy Board and MOD's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory with the objective to validate and certify the use of glycerine as a marine fuel. The project is being managed by Marine South East.

Industry collaborators wanted for large scale Solent composites structures consultation

The NCC, working with the University of Southampton, Solent LEP and partners, has been commissioned by BIS, to establish if there is sufficient industrial demand for a very large composite structures open-access facility. This is an opportunity for businesses to comment on this issue of strategic importance to the UK manufacturing sector.

The centre would focus on the development of design and manufacturing technologies needed to make very large composites structures (50m x 30m x 20m) for use in the oil and gas, construction, rail, energy and marine sectors as well as any aerospace or defence projects.

The recent Stevens’ Report ‘Transforming the Solent’ recognised the potentially transformative power of advanced composite materials for marine and other large applications. The need for support in the large structures market has been highlighted by the Composites Leadership Forum as part of their work to update the 2009 UK Composites Strategy.

Aerospace and automotive are using composite materials
in volume because they are light, durable, multi-functional
and have lower through life costs than the materials they are replacing. Other sectors are increasingly using
composite materials for much the same reasons but there are limited resources in the UK (and internationally) to help industry design, prototype and test very large structures needed to perform in harsh environments and/ or safety-
critical applications. Establishing the industrial demand for a facility to meet these needs is the purpose of
this study.

12 teams from six countries to race human powered submarines in Gosport

Twelve teams of university students from six countries will be meeting 7th-11th July 2014 to take part in the 2nd biennial European International Submarine Races at QinetiQ’s Ocean Basin in Gosport; the biggest covered water space in Europe.

The week-long event,is a unique sporting and engineering challenge. It tests the students' engineering skills, for every human powered submarine taking part is designed and built by the university concerned with vital amendments and adjustments and even re-building taking place during the week. It also tests their sporting prowess and stamina, for the teams race against the clock with the pilot wearing SCUBA gear and pedalling underwater around a demanding slalom course in the tank measuring 122m x 61m and 5.5m deep.

Teams competing for the 2014 awards are: École Polytechnique de Montréal, École de Technologie Supérieure and University of British Columbia all from Canada; Rhine Waal University of Applied Sciences from Germany; University of Delft from the Netherlands; University of Auckland from New Zealand; University of Michigan and University of Washington from the USA; and four teams from the UK with University of Bath, University of Plymouth, University of Southampton, and University of Warwick.

The eISR is organised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology in partnership with QinetiQ; and the eminent judging panel is headed by Vice Admiral Sir Robert Hill, KBE, FIMarEST.

On Wednesday 9th July, the eISR plays host to a Graduate Fair and series of Master Classes, which are open to all, with a stimulating range of speakers including Huw James, the adventurer, astronomer and outdoors enthusiast, who will wrap up the day.

The day offers attendees - racers and visitors alike - the opportunity to hear about the challenges that flow through the in-and out-trays of working marine engineers. The Fair and Master Classes run alongside the Races, and will consist of a series of presentations by sponsoring companies, who will also have recruiters available to speak to young engineers.

Participants in the Master Classes will also be welcome to visit the races. The eISR Underwater Technology Master Classes and Graduate Fair are open to anyone with an interest in marine engineering, but those that will benefit most from the opportunities are third and final year engineering students, as well as recent graduates of engineering programmes - the full programme of Master Classes will be available at http://www.subrace.eu by Spring 2014.

In addition, the IMarEST is running a Stanley Grey Lecture providing an overview on the use of AUVs for monitoring and observation in the Submarine Museum on the evening of Tuesday 8th July to be given by Dr Gwyn Griffiths, Principal and founder of Autonomous Analytics. His experience with autonomous marine vehicles stretches back to 1989 when he began his involvement with the Autosub programme.
