GLEAMS Project glycerine-run marine engine to be on display at Seawork 2014

The world’s first marine engine to be run using the exceptionally clean fuel of glycerine will be on display at Seawork 2014 together with a seminar session entitled ‘Will my ship/workboat run on this?’ where interested parties can find out more about the fuel’s possibilities for use in the marine sector.

The Cummins marine engine will be on display throughout the exhibition on the Alicat workboat on berth V28, courtesy of Gardline Marine Services, who are partners in the GLEAMS (Glycerine Fuel for Engines and Marine Sustainability) project, and Dalby Offshore, the vessel's new owners. The Technology Strategy Board funded project is investigating the use of glycerine as a marine fuel to comply with the highest regulations for sulphur and nitrous oxide emissions, as well as slashing carbon emissions and potentially reducing costs.

The seminar, being held on Wednesday 11th June 2014 at 2.00pm at Seawork will explain why glycerine is an attractive proposition for use as a marine fuel and give an update on the testing being done to validate glycerine as an alternative to conventional marine fuels.

To register for the free event please follow the link:

The GLEAMS project has already attracted global interest from vessel operators, engine manufacturers and bunker providers as well as people keen to learn about this sulphur-free alternative fuel.

To find out more about the possibilities for glycerine as a marine fuel visit the Alicat workboat on berth V28 at Seawork and attend the free seminar on Wednesday 11th June 2014 at 2.00pm.

Additional information and reports are also available via the GLEAMS Interest Group which is free to join at:

Free Expert Help to Grow Your Business

More and more marine companies are looking to diversify their sales into new markets, or to target new customers in their existing market. For example, the growing market for offshore wind farm development and operation is creating significant opportunities for marine companies.

But most firms need some help to win business in this market, including help to identify target customers and to ensure they have the accreditations required to pre-qualify.

To meet this need, Marine South East is able to offer access to free business mentoring, geared to the needs of marine companies, under the BIS Mentoring Challenge.

Also for small firms the day to day running of a business is filled with challenges and demands that allow you little time to step back and work on the future of the business. The BIS Mentoring Challenge is a free mentoring to help your business grow.

Committing as little as a couple of hours a month to take an objective and broader view of your business and talk it through with another experienced business person can reap huge benefits for you, your business and often your turnover and profit as well.

Business owners who undergo mentoring often experience results that include:

* Increased confidence often through having an experienced business person to test ideas before implementation
* Controlled business growth and development
* Clarity of vision
* More and better trained staff
* Increased turnover and profit

To find out more about how mentoring can help your business please contact Marine South East on 02380 111590 or email admin@mseuk.org

New £3M Funding Boost for Offshore Wind Operations and Maintenance Technology Innovations

GROW:OffshoreWind, supported by the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN), has announced a £3m boost for companies looking to accelerate innovation in offshore Operation and Maintenance technologies.

The new funding call aims to support development of technologies that would strengthen the UK's long-term offshore wind supply chain needs and focuses on equipping firms to provide components and services for the operation and maintenance of wind turbines, substations, marine vessels and environmental analysis.

With 22 offshore wind farms now fully commissioned with a combined capacity of 3653MW, immediate and significant opportunities exist for English companies who are looking to either enter this market, or extend their existing presence.

The funding opportunity is a joint initiative between GROW:OffshoreWind, which works to help English companies win contracts and create employment in the offshore wind supply chain, and the KTN, an independent company established by the Technology Strategy Board to enhance the development and commercialisation of UK innovations.

The £3m funding call is open to SME (small and medium) and large manufacturers across England, with the deadline for Expressions of Interest applications set as 1pm on 20th June 2014.

£75 funding available for Collaborative R&D for 'Low Carbon Propulsion Technologies'

The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) in partnership with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Technology Strategy Board are to invest an additional £75m in collaborative R&D projects in the field of low-carbon propulsion technologies.

The APC is the centrepiece of the new joint industry and government strategy for the automotive sector and was launched to help develop, commercialise and enable the manufacture of advanced propulsion technologies in the UK.

The projects are expected to start in October 2014. They will strengthen UK capability and develop and grow the UK's propulsion systems supply chain. Projects must be collaborative and business-led. They expect total eligible project costs to be between £5m and £40m. Consortiums can apply for grant funding at different proportions of total cost depending on the organisation profile and classification of R&D. However, consortiums are encouraged to maximise the value for money of the projects; creating the greatest economic benefit per public pound of grant requested.

This competition opened on 8th May 2014. The deadline for registration is at noon on 25th June 2014 and the deadline for applications is at noon on 2nd July 2014.

Entrepreneurs needed for new EU Project

Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs is a cross-border exchange programme which gives new or aspiring entrepreneurs the chance to learn from experienced entrepreneurs running small businesses in other participating countries.

The exchange of experience takes place during a stay with the experienced entrepreneur, which helps the new entrepreneur acquire the skills needed to run a small firm.

The host benefits from fresh perspectives on his/her business and gets the opportunities to cooperate with foreign partners or learn about new markets.

The stay is partially funded by the European Union.

Whether you are a new or highly experienced entrepreneur, the programme can offer strong added value to your business: possible benefits include exchange of knowledge and experience, networking opportunities across Europe, new commercial relations or markets abroad.

EISC Ltd is currently recruiting host/new entrepreneurs for the project. For more information, contact elina@eiscltd.eu

Glycerine as an alternative fuel; workshop 11th June 2014 at Seawork, Southampton

The GLEAMS workshop, Can My Ship Run on This? looking at the use of glycerine as an alternative marine fuel, will be taking place on Wednesday 11th June 2014 at 2.00pm at the Seawork Exhibition at the ABP Port of Southampton.

The event will give an update on the work to validate glycerine as an alternative marine fuel and detail the next stage of introducing it into the marine sector.

One aspect which will be of interest to many Seawork visitors is the operation and emissions testing of a Cummins Marine Type Approved engine fueled on glycerine.

During the workshop, Phil Butler (Redwing Environmental) will be discussing the emissions testing that he has been carrying out on the engine. There is also the opportunity to see the engine operating aboard the Alicat Wind Farm Support Vessel berthed in the Seawork Pontoon area.

The Keynote speaker at the event is Dr. Paul Gilbert (University of Manchester), a member of the international Tyndall Climate Centre whose research profile includes International Low Carbon Shipping. As part of this he has investigated the scope for unilateral policies to reduce and mitigate the UK's share of international shipping emissions. Paul is currently working on the EPSRC's 'Shipping in Changing Climates' project and will be setting the scene for the challenges that the marine industry will be facing.

Another guest speaker is Professor Pat Harvey, Head of Bioenergy Research, University of Greenwich. Pat has been actively involved in the development of glycerine fuelled CHP systems and is a leading authority on the production of glycerine from microalgae. This is seen as a future source to meet increasing demand for glycerine as a fuel.

There will also be an opportunity for attendees to share their experience and contribute their thoughts and ideas on the introduction of this innovative fuel to the marine sector.

The event is free to attend and can be booked by going to the following link:

www.marinesoutheast.co.uk/event_bookings/

More information is available at the GLEAMS Interest Group site at the following link, where you can also book to attend the seminar
