TSB opens £3M 'Vessel Efficiency 2 - better systems at sea' call

The Technology Strategy Board is to invest up to £3m in collaborative R&D projects to stimulate the development of systems that can reduce emissions and improve efficiency of marine vessels.

The aim of this £3M competition is to build collaboration across the marine and maritime sector, improving the viability of supply chains, ensuring continuity of supply and creating opportunities for smaller businesses.

The TSB are seeking proposals from companies that are targeting the leisure, naval and commercial/merchant marine markets, and that have expertise in voyage performance management and vessel system technologies.

Proposals must be collaborative and business-led. They expect to fund industrial research projects, in which a business partner will generally attract up to 50% public funding for their project costs (60% for SMEs).

They expect projects to range in size from total costs of £500k to £1.5m.

This is a two-stage competition that opened for applicants on 6 January 2014. The deadline for all expressions of interest is noon on 5 March 2014.

Winners announced for Seavision & IMarEST photo competition

The winners of a photography competition aimed to capture the links between the worlds of Engineering and Maritime have been announced.

The competition, run by Seavision and in conjunction with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) ran from September to December 2013 and saw entries from all over the world from three categories; 11-14 year olds, 15-18 year olds and industry professionals.

Entries were judged earlier this year (January 2014) by representatives from the IMarEST, Marine Society & Sea Cadets, Seafarers UK, TMC Marine and Trinity House, and needed to demonstrate an "illustrated the link between the worlds of Engineering and Maritime". These broad subject areas are very closely linked, but to capture a single image to encapsulate this connection required more than just pointing-and-shooting. The judges were looking for an image that had distinct visual impact, whilst emphasising the inter-dependence of these well- established British professions.

The competition, "Picture This", was initiated by SeaVision and encouraged young people to find out a little about the maritime and marine professional world whilst also giving those who work in the sector the opportunity to show off their work environment.

With over 350 entries received, the judges, faced a tough job in deciding the winning entries.

Details of all the winners and their images can be found at:
http://www.seavision.org.uk/competitions/picturethis

Seavision is the national campaign to enthuse the young people of today about the maritime opportunities of tomorrow. The diversity of careers in the maritime/marine sector is promoted through educational and maritime related activities for 11 to 22 year olds.

Few of our target audience understand how crucial the sea and the maritime sector are to modern life. Fewer still are aware of the vast range of diverse, interesting and exciting maritime activities and careers. Our sector employs over 531,000 people and contributes more than £26.5 billion each year to the UK economy.

The IMarEST is an international membership body and learned society for all marine professionals. The IMarEST (a registered charity) is the first Institute to bring together marine engineers, scientists and technologists into one international multi-disciplinary professional body. It is the largest marine organisation of its kind with a worldwide membership of around 15,000 based in over 100 countries.

Multiphysics Simulation for Marine Applications, 4th February 2014, Poole

Are you unsure about how to use CFD in your design process? Do you want to explore other methods for using CFD to design marine systems?

If so, you can join CD Adapco on February 4th, 2014 at the RNLI in Poole, for a workshop on CFD simulation for marine applications with a focus on high-speed planing and luxury craft. This event will highlight the latest innovations and benefits of computational fluid dynamics in the marine industry, plus alternatives to physical testing and empirical methods.

Learn how naval architects from companies like Det Norske Veritas, Daewoo, Germanischer Lloyd, Hyundai, Lloyd's Register, Samsung, Technip, and American Bureau of Shipping use engineering simulation (CFD) to answer both design and operational questions.

Discover new ways to:
* Modify bilge keels to prevent excessive rolling
* Optimize thruster positioning
* Get accurate hull drag predictions for transportation of a semi-submersible
* Understand wave slam loads and enhancements before going to the tank

Dr. Sven Enger will investigate the latest applications of flow, thermal and stress simulation and how they are impacting the development of today's maritime vehicles and structures.

Can my ship run on this? GLEAMS (glycerine fuel project)workshop and networking event, 27th February 2014, London

‘Can my ship (or workboat) run on this?’ is the question under discussion at an event to be hosted by the GLEAMS (Glycerine fuel for Engines and Marine Sustainability) Project team on Thursday, 27th February 2014 at Lloyds Register in London.

Glycerine is non-toxic, bio-degradable, water soluble, non-volatile and has a very low flammability rating combined with minimal environmental pollution impact. Presently used to fuel standard diesel-engine Combined Heat and Power (CHP) generators, its use as an alternative marine fuel promises to provide significant benefits. This event will cover the work being done by the project on the technological and regulatory issues; and the testing of a glycerine fuelled diesel engine to a marine cycle specified by Lloyd's Register.

Delegates will hear about the factors relevant to bringing glycerine to the marine marketplace from speakers including:

Keynote speaker

* Towards 2030 - Maritime technology trends - Ken Wittamore, Triskel Marine

Ken is a marine technology adviser with a particular interest in hybrid power. He has managed a number of collaborative EU R&D projects on behalf of the International Council of Marine Industry (ICOMIA). As a member of the EU Waterborne Technology Platform, Ken is editor of the new maritime research road map. He also contributes to the Brussels based Maritime Industry & Services Group which provides the primary input to the European Commission on strategic maritime research.

* GLEAMS project introduction - Simon Powell, Marine South East, Operations Director

* Alternative marine fuels for today and the future - Tim Wilson, Lloyd's Register, Fuel Oil Bunkering Analysis and Advisory Service - Principal Specialist

* The 'true cost' of fuel and glycerine; its potential for marine use - John McNeil, Consultant to Aquafuel Research Ltd, physicist and inventor of the 'McNeil Cycle'

* The vessel operator and engineer's viewpoint' for this alternative fuel - Mark Bobby, Marine Manager, Gardline Geosurvey

The presentations will be followed by a facilitated discussion session to explore further the use of this novel fuel. Delegates will be invited to contribute their professional experience to date.

The workshop will be followed by a networking reception.

To attend the event you will first need to register as a member of the GLEAMS 'Interest Group'. Membership of the Group is free of charge and can be done through the following link: http://groupspaces.com/GLEAMSInterestGroup/join/

Following successful registration an invitation/RSVP to the event will be emailed to the new member.
