Glycerol fuel project (GLEAMS) ‘Interest Group’ attracts attention from around the world

GLEAMS (Glycerine Fuel for Engines and Marine Sustainability) is a Technology Strategy Board project under the Marine Vessel Efficiency competition. The project is examining the technological, regulatory, supply chain and commercial issues relevant to introducing glycerol to the marine fuels market.

The technology is already deployed in the construction sector for combined heat and power plants and the project is developing this for use in conventional marine diesel engines and exploring how it can best be adapted to meet marine safety and environmental requirements.

The GLEAMS 'Interest Group' was launched in November 2013 to enable potential end users and other interested parties to interact with the project, be the first to see public project information and explore possibilities for future commercial collaborations.

Following coverage in the trade press it has attracted new members from marine companies of all sizes, NGOs and government organisations located in the UK, Europe, Korea, Russia and the USA. Members interests include R&D, design, manufacture, supply chain (including fuel), vessel operators and environmental, regulation and compliance.

Their input will be valuable to help identify the key drivers and barriers for the adoption of this novel fuel and develop routes to market.

Through the 'Interest Group' website members can follow progress of the project and contribute to debates on key topics. This interaction will contribute to the agendas for the workshops and networking sessions which the project will be hosting.

The first workshop will be at Lloyd's Register, London on Thursday, 27th February 2014. All 'Interest Group' members will be invited to attend.

Membership of the Interest Group is free of charge, to join please use the following link:

TSB Funding Competition - Vessel Efficiency 2

The Technology Strategy Board, the UK agency set up to assist innovation across industries in the UK, has announced its next marine Collaborative R&D Competition - Vessel Efficiency II: Better systems at sea.

The first marine-specific competition, Vessel efficiency: piloting UK marine and maritime innovation, proved the industry's capability to develop innovative projects to make vessels more efficient, and this second competition will build on that success.

The competition will open in January 2014, covering the themes of voyage performance management and vessel system technologies. It will be seeking project proposals that demonstrate technologies that deliver significant fuel, system energy or operational efficiency improvements and/or emissions reductions, compared to the best technologies currently available.

About the Vessel Efficiency competition:

The competition builds on the industry roadmap which the Transport KTN supported the development of at the end of 2011. The road map identified several top priority themes, some of which are already being addressed through other investment routes and national activities, enabling this competition to focus on themes covering voyage performance, management and vessel system technologies.

Who should attend these events?

This competition is a welcome opportunity for marine companies throughout the UK, from leisure marine through to large shipping. The whole industry (from ship and boatbuilders to equipment and systems suppliers, including small businesses) should consider how it could help their R&D plans for next year.

The dialogue with potential project partners should start as soon as possible, so you are strongly encouraged to attend the Transport KTN awareness events (detailed below). Preparation ahead of the call open period (January to February) will ensure that you are ideally placed to maximise this opportunity. The BMF is working closely with the Transport KTN to disseminate information about this, and assist the formation of partnerships and collaborations.

What support is available to industry throughout the competition?

The Transport KTN have announced information and consortia building days for the Vessel Efficiency II "Better systems at sea" competition, expected to launch in Jan 2014. In advance of the competition launch the Transport KTN has arranged a number of consortia-building events to provide the opportunity to hear more about the competition and to network with other interested parties. There are two events remaining, being held in Merseyside and Newcastle.

New Marine engineering CEMAST Centre of Excellence due to open September 2014 at Daedalus

In September 2014 all the current Fareham college Automotive, Engineering, Marine Engineering and Manufacturing courses will be relocated to the CEMAST Centre of Excellence, a new campus currently being built on the Daedalus airfield in Lee-on-the-Solent.

The site will become the central training facility for over 900 Full Time and Part Time Students, and will also act as the main learning centre for students in apprenticeship programmes with our partner companies - BAE Systems, GE Aviation, Virgin Atlantic, Coopervision, Burgess Marine, Jensen Motorsport to mention but a few.

CEMAST offers students a choice of career first and course second. Our focus is to provide all of the knowledge that a student will need to enter their chosen field and effectively prepare them for work and/or higher study. The CEMAST curriculum has been created in partnership with local industry leaders to ensure that students gain the most relevant and up to date industry knowledge.

Studying at CEMAST is an opportunity to develop your experience and understanding of technical subjects in an industry-standard environment. With an investment of over £12 million, the purpose built workshops will be equipped with the latest technology and resources.

With strong links and partnerships with local, national and multi-national businesses, our students will have an excellent standing to move directly into employment and/or higher study following the successful completion of their course. Our links with these companies also offer students experience in the industry workplace. Many of our students have been offered paid employment within their chosen profession as many businesses are quick to recognise the valuable level of technical knowledge that our students have.

For those looking to move on to university, we also offer higher level courses, such as the Higher National Diploma and Technical Baccalaureate. These enriched qualifications offer students an academic edge to enhance their technical studies.

Marine candidates will be able to complete an intermediate diploma or advanced diploma depending on their entry qualifications. The intermediate diploma is designed to provide the candidate with a specialist work related qualification and training in marine engineering. They will gain the basic skills and understanding of marine engineering. The course includes engineering processes and techniques, working practice and science and maths for technicians. The intermediate diploma or equivalent marine qualification are the entry level requirements for the advanced diploma. The advanced diploma provides the practical skills and knowledge needed to progress to an apprenticeship or further study (e.g. H.N.C or an engineering degree.

Office and workshop space available at Endeavour Quay, Gosport

Mixed sized units of both office and workshop space, with flexible terms, are currently available to let at Endeavour Quay which is situated in a marine hub in a busy boatyard in Portsmouth Harbour.

Endeavour Quay is a highly equipped professional boatyard located on Gosport waterfront, overlooking Portsmouth Harbour. The famous and historic boatyard currently has additional office, storage and workshop space available for marine businesses to occupy.

Formerly the famous Camper & Nicholsons boatbuilding facility, this busy yard still regularly plays host to big names in the world of yacht racing including Alex Thomson and Mike Golding, as well as the Clipper fleet and yachts such as the classic J class.

Endeavour Quay also has a strong commercial client base including naval, workboat, and safety vessels; and with more than five marinas and circa 5000 leisure craft in Portsmouth Harbour, it also welcomes a large number of privately owned sail and power boats throughout the year.

The marine trade centre hopes to attract new tenants to further enhance the service offer to boat owners in the region. Already home to many marine businesses including a chandlery, rigger, sail maker, engineer, surveyor and specialist painter, the boatyard provides the perfect base for new and existing businesses to operate.

Endeavour Quay plays an important role in Gosport’s thriving marine services hub; the town is a marine leisure centre with numerous marinas and boatyards located in a busy commercial harbour. There are excellent transport links with Portsmouth Harbour, the train station and ferry terminal are only a short ferry ride away with direct trains to London Waterloo, Gatwick Airport, and the Isle of Wight. Gosport also has major road links and Southampton Airport is less than an hour away.

The large undercover boat sheds, 180 tonne travel hoist, 24 hour deep water access and no air draft restriction mean the yard is the ideal spot for bigger yachts based and visiting the region; vessels in excess of 24 metres often reside on-site for refits and repairs.

With spaces suitable for storage, offices and workshops, all units are fully serviced with power, water, data communication links and lighting.
