MSE expands expertise with new associates

With its expanding portfolio of projects, MSE needs to draw on a wide range of expertise, sometimes for short, intense input into a specific project. To meet this need, MSE has initiated a partnership of associates, comprising individuals who can collectively bring extensive marine and maritime experience.

This partnership of experts includes the original MSE team of Jonathan Williams, Simon Powell, David Rea and Sarah Johnson and the following new associates, Gwyn Griffiths, Brendan Webster, Steph Merry and Nick Lambert.

Gwyn Griffiths is an internationally recognised authority on the technology and applications of observing platforms and sensors for the marine environment and has held a number of positions at the National Oceanography Centre, National Environment Research Council and the University of Southampton.

Brendan Webster has extensive experience in national and international research and development of maritime warfare systems and more recently has been advising on the development of renewable energy and green logistics in the marine environment.

Steph Merry is a sector advisor in marine renewables for the Renewable Energy Association in London as well leading a technical consultancy specialising in marine renewable energy.

Nick Lambert has extensive experience in advanced technology in the maritime environment having enjoyed a successful career in the Royal Navy and most recently at the UK Hydrographic Office.

Maritime resource efficiency project (REMCAP) website launched

REMCAP, a European collaborative project focused on Maritime Resource Efficiency has launched a new website aimed at relevant marine companies, public sector bodies, academic institutions and research organisations, to update interested parties on its activities and achievements. Coordinated by Marine South East this Framework 7 'Regions of Knowledge' project brings together 14 partners from 6 European maritime clusters with capabilities in the marine resource extraction sectors.

All around the globe, Governments are increasingly recognising the social and economic value of the seas: as a source of energy, materials, food and leisure, as well as a transportation corridor. However, the coastal and ocean environment that provides these resources needs careful management to ensure its long-term viability. The capability to exploit marine resources, in ways that are sustainable and cost-effective, is becoming a strategic priority for maritime nations and the EU.

REMCAP aims to advance this capability by expanding innovation capacity in maritime resource efficiency. By facilitating interaction and knowledge exchange across the clusters and developing and implementing regional and joint action plans, REMCAP aims to develop the clusters' ability to highlight innovation priorities, and equally to address barriers to investment.

Although REMCAP runs for three years (December 2012 - December 2015), it will create longer term benefits through its influence on strategic planning and the creation of new cluster collaborations at regional, European and international levels.

The REMCAP project team welcomes interaction with additional maritime partners and clusters outside of the project focus area and encourages readers to visit the new website http://www.remcap.eu which provides regular updates on project development and emerging opportunities. We would also encourage you to register your interest in becoming involved in the project through the website and we will keep you updated of our progress.

Glycerol fuel project (GLEAMS) launch interest group and set date for first workshop

GLEAMS (Glycerine Fuel for Engines and Marine Sustainability) is a Technology Strategy Board project under the Marine Vessel Efficiency competition which is looking at developing vessels to burn marine glycerol in a bid to overcome rising fuel costs and tightening emissions standards.

The marine industry faces the double challenge of rising fuel costs and tightening emissions standards, including carbon emissions. The GLEAMS project is developing technology with which marine vessels can surpass the very highest regulatory standards required for Sulphur and Nitrous Oxide emissions, slash their carbon emissions, and reduce costs simultaneously.

It does this by allowing vessels to burn a widely available but under-used fuel, glycerol (glycerine), in conventional marine diesel engines, requiring only modest additional equipment that can be easily retro-fitted.

See: http://www.aquafuelresearch.com/uploads/9/7/3/7/973719/emissionimpossible.pdf

Glycerol is produced as a by-product of biofuel and as production increases, the supply of glycerol produced also increases. The marine industry is ideally placed to exploit this resource: not only is the non-toxic and non-volatile nature of glycerol highly valuable in a marine environment, but also the relatively low energy density of glycerol can be easily accommodated in the hull space of many vessel types.

At present, the technology for GLEAMS is being deployed into the construction sector in the form of combined heat & power plant. The project will develop this technology for marine use and explore how it can best be adapted to meet marine safety & environmental requirements.

Development for marine use will provide major value-add opportunities to the UK supply chain. The potential market for glycerol fuel covers a wide range of commercial vessels and the project will initially focus on:
* offshore support craft
* ferries
* survey vessels
* port/pilot boats
* fishing vessels
* dredgers

The project is facilitating the 'GLEAMS Interest Group' to enable the potential end users and other interested parties to learn more about the project outputs. Interactions with the group will assist the project to develop routes to market for this novel fuel. Group members will be first to see public project information and will have the opportunity to interact with the project consortium and other interested parties.

During this 12 month project group members will be invited to attend workshops and networking sessions as the technology develops.

Membership of the Interest Group is free of charge, to join please use the following link:
http://groupspaces.com/GLEAMSInterestGroup/join/

The first GLEAMS workshop and networking session is scheduled for Thursday 27th February 2014 and will be held at Lloyd’s Register, London.

MacRobert Award for engineering innovation 2014

First presented in 1969, the MacRobert Award is one of the UK’s most prestigious prizes for engineering innovation. It seeks to demonstrate the importance of engineering and the role of engineers and scientists in contributing to national prosperity and international prestige.

The MacRobert Award is awarded annually from a shortlist of finalists, acknowledging excellence in UK engineering innovation that has reached a stage where the levels of both commercial success and societal benefit are clear.

It is open to any individual or team from any organisation in the private, public or charitable sectors. However, no more than five individuals can be named as the key innovators behind the submission. Applications are invited for engineering innovations in any area of engineering, science, medicine or technology.

The team members of the winning entry receive a £50,000 prize as well as a gold medal for the company. All finalists gain considerable recognition and appreciation by the wider engineering community.

The announcement of the MacRobert Award 2014 will be made at the Royal Academy of Engineering Annual Awards Dinner at the Royal Opera House on 2 July. Finalists will be invited to attend and will join a mix of representatives from government, heads of industry and the media. Each of the finalists will stage an exhibition during the pre-dinner reception and a video of each finalist will be shown during the evening illustrating the innovation behind their submission.

Applications close 20 January 2014.
