New report reveals Fast Growth can come from anywhere

SMEs with rapid growth potential occupy all sectors and locations in England, and can be at any stage of their lifecycle, new analysis by GrowthAccelerator, the government backed advice and support service, reveals.

A common perception is that fast growth is the preserve of start-ups in technology-driven sectors. But new analysis of companies accessing the government-backed GrowthAccelerator service shows that high growth can literally come from anywhere, as long as the management team has the ambition and skills to make it happen.

The findings are revealed in GrowthAccelerator's first annual report, which also outlines the significant uptake and impact of the service among businesses with high growth potential nationwide.

This includes:

* Over 7,000 businesses signed up since launch in May 2012
* 3,400 businesses already increasing their turnover more quickly since engaging with Growth Accelerator
* 3,100 businesses taking on more staff more quickly
* 60 per cent of clients are over five years old, one third are over 10 years old
* 110 specialist Growth Managers and over 1,000 Growth Coaches recruited to work with businesses with high growth potential

GrowthAccelerator, launched as a partnership between the government and the private sector in May last year, is now working with over 7,000 of England's brightest businesses. Survey results suggest it is already accelerating the growth of the vast majority of these firms' turnover and employment. The service now has more than 1,000 growth coaches in operation across the country, and reports near 100 per cent satisfaction from the businesses it is helping.

Other key findings from the report include:

* Still got it: High growth can be delivered at any stage of a company's lifecycle, not just at startup

* Urban myth: High growth companies are just as likely to be located in rural areas as in urban locations in England

* National express: High growth capability is not the preserve of London and the South East, but a nationwide trend

* It's not what you do, but how you do it: GrowthAccelerator businesses are spread across all sectors - the only thing they have in common is that they are set to outperform their industry, whatever it may be

The 2013 Shipwrights Lectures are announced

The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights has announced that its 2013 lecture for marine apprentices will be held at the Turner Sims, University of Southampton on Wednesday 23rd October at 2.30 pm.

The annual lecture invites industry leaders from the leisure marine sector to inform and inspire young apprentices, shipwrights and graduates about the breadth, opportunities and career paths available in the UK's unique and dynamic marine industry.

This year, speakers include Sean McMillan, founder and Managing Director of Spirit Yachts Ltd, whose wooden epoxy boatbuilding company is widely recognised as the most significant builder of classic sailing yachts in the world. Sean's lecture, entitled: 'Well I probably wouldn't start from here' will reveal his journey with Spirit Yachts, before sharing the expertise required to work with contemporary laminate wood technology, a technique that his company takes pride in using.

Two ex apprentices from within the industry will be sharing with the audience the range of experiences they have encountered whilst progressing their careers in their company from apprentices to Project Engineers.

James Grazebrook OBE, liveryman and one of the organisers of the Shipwright Lectures, will chair a group of six leading specialists, looking at ways the industry continues to improve its environmental responsibilities. A fast-paced discussion will touch on subjects from paint to exhaust emissions, resin infusion, hybrid power, noise levels and waste-water filtration, giving apprentices an overview of developments with an opportunity for questions.

The inaugural Shipwrights Lectures were held in 2011 and attracted apprentices from highly successful companies in the marine industry located from Falmouth to Chichester. In 2012, the number of attendees increased from 250 to 290, as apprentices, shipwrights and students together with their managers, lecturers and industry guests attended the important event.

Training colleges, universities, and industry bodies including the British Marine Federation and classification societies have attended both previous lectures and will again be supporting this year's lecture.

The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights Annual Lectures are free for apprentices, shipwrights and graduates and each will receive a certificate of attendance.

Registration should be made online at http://www.shipwrights.co.uk/education/apprentice-lecture-programme

Composites training company receives renewable industry’s seal of approval

The Composites Skills Alliance, formed out of a partnership between Semta (the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies) and the National Skills Academy for Process Industries, operates under the ‘Renewables Training Network (RTN) Industry Assured’ kite mark. It is one of a number of training providers who was awarded the certificate of approval by RTN earlier this year.

The RTN recognise a number of courses designed specifically to lead to careers in the fast-growing wind and marine renewable energy sector, one of which was the Composites Skills Alliance 'Awareness of Composites' course.

The Composites Skills Alliance offers a range of courses from its general 'Awareness of Composites' one-day overview course through to five-day technical composites training. It also offers a graduate development programme for graduate engineers entering the composites field.

The RTN is the independent body set up by the wind and marine renewable energy industry to ensure the right level of training is on offer to create green jobs. It provides a clear message to employers that courses certified as "RTN Industry Assured" have been developed, scrutinised and used by the renewables sector. This brings an assurance that such courses are relevant for the upskilling of people wanting to move into this expanding industry.

Head of the Renewables Training Network (RTN),Patricia Knightley, said: "We're delighted to be able to award the industry's certificate of approval to some very worthy recipients who are helping to tackle the skills gap in fields such as mechanical and electrical engineering. Research carried out by the RTN last year highlighted a skills gap in people applying for jobs, with 31% of companies citing a shortage of specific skills in the wind and marine renewable energy sector. We're aiming to bridge that gap.

"The RTN will continue to act as a strong advocate for new forms of much-needed training provision for the dynamic wind and marine renewables sector. We're actively exploring innovative ways to create routes into careers in all areas of the wind and marine renewables value chain for people with transferable skills".
