Plans unvieled for a Studio School specialising in marine manufacturing and offshore energy for Isle of Wight

PLANS have been unveiled to open a Studio School on the Isle of Wight which would specialise in marine manufacturing and offshore energy.

The school will be the first of its kind on the Island and cater for up to 300 14 to 19-year-olds from September 2014. The plans, submitted by Southampton Studio School Academy Trust, are subject to approval by the Department for Education.

Studio Schools are a new state school model for 14 to 19 year olds of all abilities. They seek to address the growing gap between what young people require to succeed in life and the skills and knowledge that the current education system provides.

Between 14 and 16 they will gain GCSE qualifications in English, maths, double science and information technology and take part in work placements, developing their employability and work skills and a full range of extra curricular and physical activities. Post 16 they choose from a variety of qualifications, including A-levels and apprenticeships.

Southampton Studio School Academy Trust is working in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council on the plans, which will give parents and young people on the Island more choice. The Trust already has already had approval to open a similar school in Southampton in September 2013

The Island Studio School will work closely with local businesses to shape its curriculum and specialise in marine manufacturing and offshore energy.

Berthon Boat Company wins top education award

Lymington based Berthon Boat Company has won the National Apprenticeship Services’ Nuclear Decommissioning SLC Award for Medium Employer of the Year.

The Awards, run by the National Apprenticeship Service, recognise excellence in businesses that employ apprentices. The overall winners were announced at The Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham on 14th November.

Berthon Boat Company, which maintains, repairs, refits & builds leisure and commercial boats was selected due to its dedication to providing good apprentice training for its own trainees and also for encouraging, advising and mentoring other SMEs in its sector (free of charge) on how to run a successful apprenticeship programme to promote skills and expand their businesses.

On receiving the award at the event with yard manager Keith Longman, Brian May, Managing Director of Berthon, said: "I am delighted that Berthon’s dedication to apprenticeships has been recognised, but there is still much work to be done. Four of the five pillars of apprentice training are in place; Government, Colleges, parents and students are willing; however, we are now left convincing SMEs in industry to take on apprentices to replace retiring skilled employees and to provide the necessary skills for the future."
