Apprentice Funding of up to £8500 available for marine businesses

Courtesy of The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, a City Livery Charity dating back before 1299, there is up to £8500 of funding available for first year marine apprentice wages.

Berthon Boat Co Ltd, based in Lymington, Hampshire, administers the scheme on behalf of the charity and is looking for SMEs in the South East that are prepared to train apprentices as a first step to either replace an aging workforce and/or to complement skills in their search for growth.

Applicants are asked to apply directly to tricia.kelly@berthon.co.uk and are encouraged to do so even if they are only seeking information for future years since funding is on-going.

All applicants will receive the benefit of free advice about apprentice training, local colleges, appropriate wage rates, contracts, mentoring and pre-apprentice courses on COSHH and HSE, tool use and names etc.

Berthon currently have 25 apprentices and have committed to take on a further 11 this year, all funded internally, and have been awarded a number of national training awards for their success in recent years. Furthermore, they have a list of the top 50 (out of 400) applicants already interviewed, willing and able to start immediately. The aim is to provide the marine industry with hassle-free training. Apply now.

South Coast announced as next area for marine planning

The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has announced that the coast and seas from Dover to the River Dart in Devon will be the second area in England to benefit from marine planning.

Marine plans will inform and guide marine users and regulators, managing the sustainable development of marine industries, such as wind farms, shipping, marine aggregates and fishing, alongside the need to conserve and protect marine species and habitats and recognise leisure uses too.

The marine economy is currently worth more than £47 billion annually to the UK, and has the potential to increase significantly. We are the first country in the world to plan across all marine activities, for all our territorial waters, and the plan areas announced recently are two of the 10 in total to be delivered by the MMO in the next decade.

The MMO is accountable to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Caroline Spelman, who will approve each plan for consultation and adoption.

The views of all those with an interest in the South marine areas are vital to the plan making process, and the next step will be speaking to as many people as possible affected by these plans. A guide on how to get involved will be published before plan-making officially starts in early 2013.

Matched funding to grow your business

If you want to improve your business, MAS can provide practical help - and matched funding!

The Manufacturing Advisory Service is looking for manufacturers who want to grow their business. We can help you define a project to achieve this and provide matched funding to bring in the required specialist knowledge.

Provided your proposed project has a definable business benefit, MAS can provide up to 50% towards the cost. On average, the grants are around £1,500 per project and your company can engage in 3 projects each year.

In broad terms, the funding can be used for consultancy to:
* develop business strategy to improve sales and commercial performance
* identify new sales channels
* instigate or progress New Product Development
* implement efficiency improvements
* provide in-company training on an advanced manufacturing process or technology
* support ISO9000, 9001 or 14001 implementation
* develop IPR protection, such as patent applications

This is not an exhaustive list, and we will consider any project where you need specialist knowledge to grow the business.

We're very aware that the last thing a small company needs is excessive bureaucracy, so we've made the application process as simple as possible. You also have a free choice in the consultant you choose, although you can select from the MAS Supplier Database.

* There is a simple application form to complete
* The supplier you choose needs to register on the MAS Supplier Database if not already registered
* The funding decision is made normally made in a matter of days

Steve Sharp, your local MAS Advisor will help you through the process from beginning to end, answer any questions and work with the supplier to make the process as straightforward as possible.

To arrange a meeting to discuss your requirements, please call Steve Sharp
on 07508 500085 or email steve.sharp@mymas.org
