Marine South East Wind Farm Events attract large audiences

Over 180 people attended a series events hosted by Marine South East in April to inform local businesses about potential opportunities arising from the proposed Offshore Wind Farms off the South Coast of England.

Presentations were delivered by representatives from E.ON, Bid Perfect, the Manufacturing Advisory Service and Marine South East. E.ON speakers gave businesses a very informative overview of the Rampion Project which was followed by MAS who talked about grants and support available to help companies reduce costs by becoming more efficient. Bid Perfect gave a lively presentation on how to improve tenders to enable companies to create winning bids.

Feedback from the events has been very positive and Marine South East is now organising a series of free one-day workshops with MAS and Bid Perfect on the theme of 'Winning Bids and Reducing Costs'. The workshops will take place on 3rd May in Shoreham, 17th May in Newhaven and 31st May in Chichester.

Full details of the workshops including booking information can be found at the following link.

WaveSentry partner EMU highlight their involvement with the project

WaveSentry is a project developing an improved system for the measurement, forecasting and portrayal of sea-states. EMU, one of the WaveSentry project partners, undertook to gain the opinions of potential end users for the development of a new sea state forecasting tool via a survey last year.

EMU analysed all the results from the survey as well as participants thoughts and opinions which will be directly fed into the development of WaveSentry. EMU Limited has led the development of this pilot specification to gain a full understanding of the different user groups, their requirements, preferences and future aspirations for sea state forecasting.

EMU have taken advantage of the wide client base they already have, alongside the client base of other consortium members, in order to get close to those people that will benefit most from this type of product.

There are clearly two avenues to consider in the development of WaveSentry:

1 A system which offers high accuracy, trustworthy forecasting
2 A system which delivers forecasts in a way suitable to each user.

The diverse array of datasets incorporated within WaveSentry will hopefully lead to high forecast accuracy; temporally and spatially. We aim to achieve this by the inclusion of multiple data feeds, forecast models and real-time data.

Through user consultation it is clear that the WaveSentry system must be flexible to enable a variety of users to obtain the information pertinent to them and to interact with the data to fully understand the forecasts. Here at WaveSentry we want to offer a system which satisfies a whole variety of users - one which is simple enough to use quickly and easily but that offers further functionality to those who want to delve deeper into the data and forecasts.

To maximise the business benefits of WaveSentry, Marine South East has created WaveSentry KN. This specialist knowledge network will facilitate the identification and exploitation of spin-out technologies and market opportunities for managing the risks of marine operations in adverse sea states.

Organisations from both industry and the knowledge base concerned with the provision or use of sea-state measurements and forecasting are invited to join the WaveSentry Knowledge Network.

To register your interest in the WaveSentry KN or for more information please contact Simon Powell on: 02380 111592 or email simon@marinesoutheast.co.uk

or to join the Knowledge Network please go to http://www.groupspaces.com/wavesentrykn/join

WaveSentry will be organising an interactive workshop to introduce the WaveSentry project and identify innovation opportunities in the measurement and forecasting of sea state. The event will take place Thursday 24th May 2012, 10.30-12.30 at the Seawork Exhibition. For more information including online booking please go to:

Daedalus gets planning permission for Marine and Aerospace business park

Councillors at Fareham Borough Council and Gosport Borough Council have given their official approval for a major technology and manufacturing hub, for marine and aerospace industries, at the former HMS Daedalus site between Stubbington and Lee-on-the-Solent in Hampshire.

The site will undergo a huge regeneration to potentially create more than a million square feet of employment space with planners expecting to attract around 3,700 new jobs over the next 14 years – mainly in aerospace and marine industries.

The site was designated as one of 11 enterprise zones around the country by the Government last August and businesses that decide to invest there could benefit from discounted rates and guaranteed superfast broadband.

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), which owns most of the land and is running the project with the Solent Local Enteprise Partnership (LEP) and Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH), expects between 38 and 45 businesses to set up there initially.

Innovative and sustainable feed ingredients for the aquaculture industry, 22nd May 2012, Gothenburg

GU Holding AB, University of Gothenburg and Region Västra Götaland and its international partners are arranging this event, as part of the EMSAC project, to take place during the European Maritime Days 2012, to highlight the current situation of fish feed and what the future holds.

This burning topic will be the theme of a workshop taking place on Tuesday 22nd May 2012 at the European Maritime Day 2012, Gothenburg, Sweden.

The objective of the workshop is to bring together key European scientists, industries and policy makers within aquaculture and fisheries to discuss the industry's need for novel feed ingredients to produce sustainable and cost-effective fish feed. A major issue is to discuss sustainable and near future ingredient alternatives to wild caught fish as raw material for feed.

The speakers will give an overview of the current situation of fish feed and what the future holds as well as addressing burning issues and present alternative feed ingredients (e.g. fungi, microalgae, and mussel meal) to support a future sustainable aquaculture industry. The speakers and other experts within the field will take part in a panel discussion on the topic.

The workshop creates a platform that will not only strengthen the cooperation between industry, academia and policy makers but also promote dialogue and information-exchange on the topic. In addition, it is hoped that new professional networks will be created, which will be of benefit to future discussion on the topic.

Who Should Attend?

The target audience is experts representing the aquaculture and fisheries industries and authorities, scientists, marine organisations and maritime clusters. The organisers aim to achieve a mix of participants from the above sectors with representation from different countries.

Speakers

Keynote speaker from EWOS Group; further speakers to be announced shortly.

WaveSentry Knowledge Network - Advances in Sea-State Measuring and Forecasting Workshop 24th May 2012, Southampton

WaveSentry will be organising an interactive workshop to introduce the WaveSentry project and identify innovation opportunities in the measurement and forecasting of sea state. The event will take place Thursday 24th May 2012, 10.30-12.30 at the Seawork Exhibition.

Many marine operations are dependent on high quality information on sea-state (wave height, period, direction, steepness) for reasons of economics and safety. At present, available information is based on atmospheric/ocean models and lacks sufficient temporal and spatial resolution.

The WaveSentry project is developing a new information and forecasting tool for managing the risks of marine operations in adverse sea states. WaveSentry aims to exploit new data sources, including novel satellite remote measurements of wave steepness as well as real-time buoy and ship data. The project is developing and applying techniques to substantially enhance the integration of diverse data sources, in order to offer improved sea-state data to multiple end-user markets.

During the project a demonstration system will operate in the English Channel but as WaveSentry integrates additional data sources it has the potential to offer global coverage.

The workshop is an opportunity for experts (from scientific, engineering and commercial user perspectives) to:

* Explore how advances in the measurement and forecasting of sea-state will impact users
* Assess the aspects of measurement/forecasting/hindcasting that are of value to end users
* Identify opportunities for new collaboration and added value
* Identify the major challenges to radical improvements in sea-state measurement and forecasting systems
* The most promising topics identified will be developed through further workshops.

Who Should Attend?
* Decision-makers who would benefit from the more accurate measurement of sea state and improved forecasting services. I.e. maintenance of off-shore renewable installations; passenger services; marine civil engineering; search and rescue etc.
* Engineers / scientists / academics working in wave measurement, sensor techniques, telemetry data fusion, modelling and sensor networks.
* Users from public authorities, water companies and coastal survey contractors

Speakers from the WaveSentry partnership will introduce key elements of the WaveSentry system. Marine South East will then facilitate a discussion session.
