EMSAC project hosts successful workshop on measuring nutrients in coastal waters

Marine South East recently hosted a workshop on the topic of 'Challenges for Measuring Nutrients in Coastal Waters' as part of the EMSAC (European Marine Science Applications) project at the Oceanology Exhibition 2012 exhibition and conference.

The workshop was an opportunity for experts (from scientific, engineering and commercial perspectives) to:

* Explore deficiencies in current measuring technologies
* Consider the potential for future advances in know-how and technology
* Identify the major challenges to radical improvements in nutrient monitoring systems.

To set the scene experts from Pole Mer Bretagne(France), Satlantic (Canada), Wet Labs (USA), Ifremer (France) and the National Oceanography Centre (Southampton, UK) gave a series of presentations outlining the European regulatory framework; the design, manufacture and use of nutrient sensors and the potential for emerging 'lab on chip' technologies.

A facilitated discussion enabled the 34 delegates to identify a number of issues and opportunities that might form the basis for new collaborative projects. In collaboration with its partners, Marine South East will develop the most promising into new proposals.

Marine Energy Competition

A new £10.5million collaborative R&D competition supporting marine array technologies opened on 5th March 2012.

The Technology Strategy Board, Scottish Enterprise and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) are to invest up to £10.5m in collaborative research and development to support successful deployment and operation of the first series of wave and tidal energy arrays.

The marine energy industry (by which we mean wave and tidal stream energy) is at a critical stage as it moves from single device prototypes towards first arrays of full-scale devices. The industry needs to demonstrate that energy from wave and tidal power can successfully be generated at scale and to reduce the cost of the energy produced. As the industry plans arrays for the first time, new technical barriers are emerging that are common across the industry.

Through the competition, it is hoped that innovation can address the key common challenges. This will de-risk deployment of early arrays by removing technical barriers and reducing the cost of energy produced. The results of this competition are expected to help UK businesses to build sustainable economic growth by exploiting new innovative technologies in a growing market and by removing barriers to successful array deployment. The competition also aims to facilitate industry joint working in defining and developing the best solutions using expertise from across the supply chain (including parallel sectors), and in disseminating learning and progress from projects.

Proposals must be collaborative and business-led. The competition opens on 5 March 2012. The deadline for registration is at noon on 10 April 2012 and the deadline for expressions of interest is at noon on 17 April 2012. Successful projects will generally attract up to 50% public funding. Investment of between £500k and £1.5m are expected per project, although projects outside these ranges may be considered.

WaveSentry Knowledge Network - Advances in Sea-State Measuring and Forecasting Workshop 24th May 2012, Southampton

WaveSentry will be organising an interactive workshop to introduce the WaveSentry project and identify innovation opportunities in the measurement and forecasting of sea state. The event will take place Thursday 24th May 2012, 10.30-12.30 at the Seawork Exhibition.

Many marine operations are dependent on high quality information on sea-state (wave height, period, direction, steepness) for reasons of economics and safety. At present, available information is based on atmospheric/ocean models and lacks sufficient temporal and spatial resolution.

The WaveSentry project is developing a new information and forecasting tool for managing the risks of marine operations in adverse sea states. WaveSentry aims to exploit new data sources, including novel satellite remote measurements of wave steepness as well as real-time buoy and ship data. The project is developing and applying techniques to substantially enhance the integration of diverse data sources, in order to offer improved sea-state data to multiple end-user markets.

During the project a demonstration system will operate in the English Channel but as WaveSentry integrates additional data sources it has the potential to offer global coverage.

The workshop is an opportunity for experts (from scientific, engineering and commercial user perspectives) to:

* Explore how advances in the measurement and forecasting of sea-state will impact users
* Assess the aspects of measurement/forecasting/hindcasting that are of value to end users
* Identify opportunities for new collaboration and added value
* Identify the major challenges to radical improvements in sea-state measurement and forecasting systems
* The most promising topics identified will be developed through further workshops.

Who Should Attend?
* Decision-makers who would benefit from the more accurate measurement of sea state and improved forecasting services. I.e. maintenance of off-shore renewable installations; passenger services; marine civil engineering; search and rescue etc.
* Engineers / scientists / academics working in wave measurement, sensor techniques, telemetry data fusion, modelling and sensor networks.
* Users from public authorities, water companies and coastal survey contractors

Speakers from the WaveSentry partnership will introduce key elements of the WaveSentry system. Marine South East will then facilitate a discussion session.
