WaveSentry KN; A Knowledge Network in the field of Advanced Sea-State Measurement and Forecasting

To maximise the business benefits of WaveSentry, a project developing an improved system for the measurement, forecasting and portrayal of sea-states, Marine South East is creating WaveSentry KN. This specialist knowledge network will facilitate the identification and exploitation of spin-out technologies and market opportunities for managing the risks of marine operations in adverse sea states.

The WaveSentry project is developing an improved decision support tool for the many marine operations that are impacted by adverse sea conditions for reasons of both economics and safety. Currently available information is based on atmospheric/ocean models which lack temporal and spatial information. The WaveSentry project aims to exploit new data sources, including novel satellite remote measurements of wave steepness as well as real-time buoy and ship derived data.

Organisations from both industry and the knowledge base concerned with the provision or use of sea-state measurements and forecasting are invited to join the WaveSentry Knowledge Network.

To register your interest in the WaveSentry KN or for more information please contact Simon Powell on: 02380 111592 or email simon@marinesoutheast.co.uk

SMARTA Sustainability Network event brings businesses and universities together

Marine South East recently hosted delegates and speakers from more than 21 organisations at a SMARTA Sustainability Network event held at Port Solent. SMARTA is a project funded by the European Development Fund.

The theme was an exploration of the ways in which businesses could enhance their research and development activities through working with universities and research organisations.

The first speaker, James Grazebrook of Halyard (M&I) gave a fascinating insight into two pieces of work completed with the University of Southampton. The first involved working on a Euro750,000 EU-funded project (Soundboat) to investigate methods of verifying acoustic limits set by the European Commission under the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) in 2000. The second involved the development of a Helmholtz resonator silencer. The collaboration helped Halyard progress from a 25 employee company with £2.5m turnover in 2000 to an 80 employee company turning over £6.5m in 2008.

Ned Minns of IT Power talked about the tremendous benefits they've seen from working with graduates from Bristol and Southampton Universities. Three graduates on Eng.D programmes joined the IT Power team to work on various projects. Thea Morgan (Bristol) explored improvements in Systems Engineering, Jack Giles (Southampton) undertook an investigation into a flow acceleration system and Mark Leybourne (Southampton) undertook an investigation into the validation and scaling of the OWEL wave power system.

The final speaker, Susan Phillips of EchoPilot spoke about the history of the company and how they had worked to great advantage with QinetiQ and Bournemouth University to develop forward looking sonars.

Following the presentations, a panel comprising representatives of Southampton, Portsmouth and Southampton Solent universities answered questions on the services and facilities available from the universities and how these could best be accessed by marine businesses.

The delegates' response to the event was whole heartedly supportive, with many stating how useful and informative it had been.

If you would like to join the SMARTA Sustainability Network, please email Steve Sharp stephen@marinesoutheast.co.uk

SMARTA is a project part funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.

First Shipwrights Lectures attract a full house audience from Apprentices to Admirals

Apprentices, students and young shipwrights were inspired, motivated and enlightened about the world of opportunities open to them in both the British and Global marine industry, at the first in a series of Shipwright’s Lectures, held in one of the world’s leading maritime cities.

The Turner Sims lecture theatre at the University of Southampton saw a packed audience for the lecture held in October. The event drew over 120 apprentices, from all over the UK, together with 100 graduates, university and college students aspiring to careers in the marine sector. They heard introductions and welcome addresses from leading industry figures, including Admiral Sir Jock Slater and closing remarks from Sir John Parker, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering and himself a former apprentice.

The event attracted attendees from the UK’s largest marine companies with boat builders Sunseeker, Pendennis, Princess, SYS, and Discovery Yachts, as well as specialist engineering companies such as Halyard, through to organisations including the RNLI and National Waterways Museum.

The designers of Ellen MacArthur’s round the world yacht Kingfisher, father and son team Rob and Tom Humphreys presented the first lecture, which gave a fascinating insight into the past, present and future of yacht design and technology.

The second lecture treated the audience to a rare insight into the future of engine technology from Volvo Penta Ian Benning, Sales Director of marine engines at Volvo Penta UK.

The Shipwrights Lectures, have been organised by The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, which was formed in 1387 as a Trade Guild for shipwrights working on the London River. A number of its current members work and employ young people in the marine leisure sector. Organisation of the first Shipwrights Lecture was headed by Michael Derrick, a Shipwright and well known industry expert, in conjunction with the University of Southampton, with support from individuals and organisations including Halyard Marine, Discovery Yachts. British Marine Federation and Brockenhurst College, whose students filmed the event.
