University of Southampton and Lloyd's Register collaboration announced

World-leading expertise from the University of Southampton and Lloyd’s Register is being brought together in the largest research collaboration of its kind in the UK to be based in Southampton.

Drawing together the engineering excellence of both organisations in a new research hub in Southampton, the collaboration will focus on innovations in transport, energy and the environment. Academics and industry experts will combine forces throughout the entire process of identifying and researching challenges faced by businesses and communities worldwide to more effectively deliver solutions.

At the heart of the Centre there will be a Maritime Institute, drawing on the University’s wide range of expertise in maritime engineering, ocean science, law and business and strengthening links with the existing, highly varied range of marine businesses on the south coast.

Work will commence in the New Year on the state-of-the-art University of Southampton Centre of Excellence, which has an initial investment of £116 million. The campus will include the Lloyd’s Register Group Technology Centre, the cornerstone of the organisation’s global research and development network.

"By locating the cornerstone of Lloyd's Register global research and development network alongside the University's internationally renowned engineering scientists, we will establish a research and innovation hub that is unique in scale and ambition for the UK. Building on our 40-year history of collaboration in ship science, marine and energy-related projects, we will extend our cooperation to create new technologies that address some of society’s most pressing problems, as well as providing our students with unique opportunities to interact with real-time development projects and connect directly with potential future employers.” comments Professor Don Nutbeam, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton.

The University has received funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the South of England Economic Development Agency to enable the new Centre of Excellence to take shape.

The Institute will aim to stimulate innovation, create new businesses and establish the city of Southampton and the wider south Hampshire region as a magnet for inward investment in the marine sector in the UK.

The first phase of the development at the University’s former Boldrewood campus is scheduled for completion in 2014.

Brittany Ferries announce return to Poole Harbour

Poole Harbour Commissioners are delighted to confirm that, following intensive and prolonged discussions with Brittany Ferries, the Ro/Ro ferry "Barfleur" will return to the Poole/Cherbourg route from March 2011.

This is excellent news for Poole which will once again see a regular passenger service between Poole and the Continent and a doubling of conventional ferry traffic sailings through the port.

The new service will also provide increased opportunities for freight operators seeking to cross the Channel. The freight ferry "Cotentin" will continue to operate from Poole providing 2 direct sailings to Santander every week as well as completing several crossings to Cherbourg, and the fast craft will also be continued.

Jim Stewart, CEO of Poole Harbour Commissioners, welcomed the news, commenting that the long standing relationship between his organisation and Brittany Ferries would be strengthened further by the reintroduction of the ferry. "Many passenger customers and hauliers will be delighted to see the 'Barfleur' back in Poole operating on a regular schedule.

We look forward to working closely with Brittany Ferries to ensure that their customers continue to receive a first class service from the Port of Poole. We are optimistic that they will recognise the advantages of the route and will support the 'Barfleur'. We recognise that the viability of the service will be reviewed next September – the message has to be use it or lose it".

Port of Southampton welcomes Transport Minister Mike Penning MP and unveils plans for a fifth cruise terminal

The Port of Southampton recently welcomed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, Mike Penning MP, for a tour of the UK’s premier cruise port, during which Associated British Ports (ABP) presented its exciting plans for a brand new fifth cruise terminal.

It is expected that work will start on the new cruise terminal in 2011 and will become operational in 2013

The cruise industry has seen remarkable growth over the last ten years, driven by the increase in demand for cruise holidays starting and ending in the UK. As a direct result of this increase, ABP has, in recent years, invested over £41 million in its cruise facilities, which has enabled the port to provide world class facilities which can cater for all sizes of cruise ships. The new terminal will be designed to accommodate the largest cruise vessels afloat and will be the result of a further £30 million investment by ABP.

The Port of Southampton’s fifth cruise terminal follows Ocean Terminal, the fourth dedicated cruise terminal, which opened in May 2009 and has subsequently handled more than 800,000 passengers. The Port of Southampton Master Plan from 2009 foresaw the need for additional cruise terminal facilities in the Western Docks.

Local marine company's appointment with the Queen

Local marine company, Trimline was one of a number of South East marine companies that contributed to the build of the Queen Elizabeth which is the latest addition to the fleet of luxury Cunard cruise ships. Trimline's contribution ensured that the 92,000 ton ship was ready for her appointment with the Queen when the Queen Elizabeth was named by Her Majesty in Southampton recently.

A team of over 20 Trimline personnel joined the ship as she sailed from her Italian builders to make sure that the finishing touches were complete by the time she reached her base port. Trimline was involved with a wide variety of tasks ranging from converting crew cabins to building a training room.

As the Queen Elizabeth carried out her initial voyages, Trimline continued to support the ship, carrying out modifications in the crew and passenger areas as the ship completed swift turnarounds in Southampton.

Energy efficiency rating for ocean-going ships launched by Richard Branson

Ships could be charged different port fees depending on how mmuch carbon they emit, according to ideas being discussed at the UN climate summit in Cancun.

A free internet database set up by Richard Branson will list the energy efficiency of almost every ocean-going vessel, in a scheme designed to reduce shipping emissions by nearly 25 per cent.

Using publicly available data on the engine size and CO2 emissions of nearly 60,000 ships, exporters and importers, as well as holidaymakers on cruises, will be able to choose between clean and dirty ships.

The initiative, called Shippingefficiency.org, rates ships from A-G in a similar fashion to ratings given to fridges or washing machines. It will allow supermarkets, oil and mining companies, food importers, retailers and manufacturers to specify that their goods are sent from places like China or Australia only by the least polluting ships.

Britain, which imports most of its food and manufactured goods by sea, is expected to be one of the heaviest users of the database.

Shipping contributes around one billion tonnes of CO2 a year, about three to four per cent of the world's total. This makes it collectively the sixth largest greenhouse gas polluter in the world, just after Germany.

Shipping has been slow to address carbon emissions. The world fleet has been driven for years by engines designed to burn the cheapest, dirtiest "bunker" fuel. Nearly 15 per cent of the world's ships account for about half of all the industry emissions.

Under the new ratings, the biggest ships in the world range from the most to the least efficient. The giant tax haven cruise ship, The World, rates an F - the second worst score - the Queen Mary 2 is only slightly better with an E, and the massive Allure of the Seas - launched last week and officially the largest cruise liner in the world - is an F.

The lowest score, G, goes to the mighty Aegean, a giant crude oil tanker built nearly 40 years ago, but top marks go to the Berge Stahl, a bulk carrier which is so big it can only dock in two ports in the world.

The database is expected to be used by ports to offer incentives to clean ships, as well as to shipowners and designers.
