Have your say on the Marine Navigation Bill...
Proposals to improve marine safety in ports and at sea were published recently and are open for consultation until 25 July 2008. The Marine Navigation Bill will improve the ability of the Secretary of State, harbour authorities and the General Lighthouse Authorities to manage shipping and allow the better management of wrecks to help to minimise their environmental and financial impact.

Competition Heats Up as Schools Marine Challenge Race Day Approaches 1st July 2008...
The Schools Marine Challenge race day is nearly upon us, with entrants making final changes to their craft. Students from schools across the South East have spent many hours in the workshop honing their marine design and engineering skills to develop a winning entry. In fact some schools are taking Schools Marine Challenge a step further and have included it within their curriculum work.

Marine South East on hand to help your business at this year’s SeaWork, 10-12 June 2008...
Seawork 2008 will be officially opened on Tuesday 11 June by the Right Honourable John Denham MP, who represents Southampton Itchen. The event promises to be an exposé of commercial ingenuity and talent with products and vessels from around the world, presented by the 450 exhibitors.

Do you have vacancies to advertise? The Maritime Training and Careers Pavilion is back, bigger and better, at Seawork 2008. Not only does the Pavilion contain recruitment agencies and maritime training organisations, other companies eager to promote their services to the commercial marine sector have also booked space. Graduate Jobs Southampton has also confirmed that it will be exhibiting.

Graduate Job Southampton celebrates successful first year...
GJS celebrated its 1st anniversary in April, and has seen good results over the 12 month period, with around 2,500 students and graduates registered who are looking to work in the region, more than 1,000 companies registered on the site and more than 400,000 hits on the website.
It is free to advertise on the GJS website and now is a great time to get your job advert on the website as final year students prepare to leave university and look for work. The site also contains some great tips on writing job adverts to attract graduates to your vacancy.

MoD Green Light for Carrier Order...
The MoD has announced today that it is ready to proceed with the contract signature for the two new super aircraft carriers. HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales will be the biggest and most powerful surface warships ever constructed in the UK, and will remain in the fleet for an expected 50 years from entering service in 2014 and 2016 respectively.

The Manufacturing Advisory Service South East has been helping companies in the region to develop their manufacturing capability. The organisation is part of a national Government manufacturing initiative and is funded by SEEDA. It was ooriginally set up by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) but is now a programme of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR)

We already have hydro-electricity and growing wind and biomass energy industries but there are other opportunities out there too. Harnessing marine renewable energy, more specifically wave and tidal stream energy, is not new but it is only now that we are focussing on making it a reality.
