Foreword...
2008 promises to be a busy year for many with a number of events currently being finalised; those scheduled for February and March are highlighted below. Skills and innovation will be major issues for Marine South East over the next 12 months. Already, the first marine specific CAD/CAM training course, which started in January and was organised by Marine South East, has proved a hit with businesses in the region.
What’s new this month?
BRUSSELS has confirmed that it is to push ahead with its own ‘maritime day’ designed to take place four months prior to the World Maritime Day in September, which is co-ordinated by the International Maritime Organisation. European Union maritime affairs commissioner Joe Borg says there is a “widespread desire” for Europeans to celebrate their collective maritime heritage. The EU proposal is a response to the desire among stakeholders to celebrate Europe’s maritime heritage and future, and to throw a spotlight on its maritime activities.

Marine South East calls for a bold approach to the Daedalus site...
MareNet recently hosted an event to discuss the future of the Daedalus site. Jonathan Williams, CEO of Marine South East, summed up the mood of the meeting which favoured an, “ambitious and far reaching vision, potentially combining a marina, slipway and tarmac runway to create a unique cross-sector development opportunity for the South Coast.”

MBE for Local Maritime Champion, Bill Moses...
South East England's 'champion' for the marine industry and one of the driving forces behind efforts to bring prosperity back to the River Medway has been awarded a MBE in the 2008 New Year Honours list for his work with the Dover Counselling Centre and services to the marine business.

Health and Safety Guide launched by the BMF...
The Collins Stewart London Boat Show saw the launch of the new BMF Health and Safety Guide that will be distributed free to all BMF members shortly. It includes an up to date overview of Health and Safety requirements complemented by three Sector Guides covering the specific Health and Safety needs of Boat Building and Repairs, Marinas and Boatyards and Boat Using at Work.

Storm of interest generated at the 54th London Boat Show...
The Excel Exhibition Centre once again played host to the annual Collins Stewart London Boat Show held in January this year, with 500 exhibitors and over 1000 boats on display. Over 127,000 people visited the show and were treated to a host of entertainment. However, the Show had a more serious side to it with businesses from across the South East looking to network, showcase their wares, launch products and services, as well as generate lucrative sales.

First Marine Specific CAD/CAM Training Course Launched...
The first training course covering the fundamental and advanced elements of CATIA software commenced on Monday 21st. January, when personnel from leading Yacht Designers and Production Boat Building companies attended the Marine Regional Resource Centre (RRC) Southampton.

Representatives from the international Superyacht sector will be visiting the South East, as part of the four day Superyacht UK Tour of Excellence taking place April 22nd to 25th. UK marine equipment manufacturers and service companies are invited to join this mission.
Importantly, Turkey is a growing shipbuilder and ship repairer. Turkish private sector dockyards aim to reach 1 million tonnes of steel fabrication per year as well as 2 million deadweight of ship construction and 10 million deadweight of maintenance and repair capacity.
