Welcome to the November issue of email news. This month we have been lookng at training opportunities for both young people still at school and those already in the industry. Take a look at our article on training to prepare for future technical advances through the Cad/Cam project. We have funding and training opportunities available to those, particularly in the Super yacht sector, who are interested in preparing for the future.

Skilled engineers needed for £1.5billion offshore wind farm...
Thanet is about to benefit from a jobs boom thanks to the recent go ahead for the London Array wind-farm project. The £1.5billion project will be the largest of its kind in Europe and will require skilled workers, particularly marine engineers. The construction of the turbines is likely to be in Ramsgate prior to them being transported to their final location in the Thames Estuary, meaning an influx of skilled workers to the area.

The Regional Resource Centre (RRC) has recently been involved in a project to work with Southampton-based Yellowfin to help them develop their composite and CAD skills to meet the needs of the development of their revolutionary advanced propulsion system named Variable Surface Drive (VSD).

Funding to help companies access greater support for training...
Solutions, a Hampshire based training and skills partnership, has recently secured funding from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to help boost its research of training and skill needs of 10,000 local employers.

The Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH) launched its new entrepreneur’s innovation challenge on the 30th October. The "PUSH AHEAD!" Challenge is led by South Hampshire businesses with the aim of developing young peoples’ entrepreneurial skills. Open to schools from South East and South West Hampshire it will challenge teams of Year 9 and 10 students to develop a new and innovative business product, idea or service which will reflect environmental sustainability issues.

Schools Marine Challenge is seeing another year of growth since it started in 2006. We have just signed up our 20th school to take part, following on from the 10 schools that took part in the first year and then 15 schools last year.

Hythe site set to become new marine park...
It’s just over a year since the former US Army base at RAF Hythe closed in September 2006 with the loss of around 200 jobs. Since then, the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) has been working behind the scenes with local partners, including Marine South East to ensure the successful future of the site.
